Trump Wins YUGE in a Government Shutdown
American Spectator ^ | April 24, 2017, 12:04 am | LARRY SCHWEIKART

Posted on 04/23/2017 11:51:36 PM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

We’re looking at a possible government shutdown next Saturday, and that’s got some conservatives nervous. They shouldn’t be. Admittedly, past government shutdowns — or threats of shutdowns — have worked against conservatives. With Trump, however, it would likely be a different story....

even a partial shutdown plays precisely into the Trump agenda and his campaign promises of draining the swamp. Trump’s base, as well as “swing voters” who are fed up with out of control spending, would, of course, be cheered by such a move. Moreover, such a shutdown plays into Trump’s hands by giving him every excuse to slash funding to “sanctuary cities,” to bloated university programs, to global warming science grants, and on and on. Social Security checks will continue, the military will be funded, and necessary services will hum along while grants to study the sex life of the fruit bat will not. Deep State bureaucrats who so depend on the federal government for their very existence would be the ones most hurt. In short, Trump can not only make even a partial shutdown look like the Democrats’ fault but shield many of the (normally) loudest voices from the pain.

More important, every minute the bloated government is shut down reinforces the perception of Trump as a businessman who cuts the fat, extracts more efficiency, and makes the U.S. government more like a business. Unlike the Clinton/Gingrich shutdown battle, the control over what sectors of the government get their money is in the hands of a Republican president, not a Democrat who held up funds on the most visible and sympathetic programs. Trump would relish starving all the non-essential offices like PBS and NPR or global-warming science grants.

If he doesn't interfere, we can get this done,” said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York. “So we ask him to let us do our work and to not throw in some last-minute poison pills that could undo it and we can get this done.”

Schumer seems to think Trump's 42% approval rating (WP/ABC poll) gives the Dem's the o.k. to stop wall funding. Though the President's rating may be below 50%, his supporters are still 94+% behind him and his agenda. If he were to cave, he would lose a lot of that support. I would bet he stands firm as he knows he can't go back on his signature election promise.

>>Imagine non-essential services shut down .... forever.<<

Damn! We could only hope. lol

The federal gubbamint has overstepped it's constitutional bounds. No way, no how should taxpayers be paying for the Endowment for the Arts, Public broadcasting, NPR.

I hope Trump sticks to his guns. I really do.

Wish I could have been there. I am normally based in DC but was deployed at the time, doing a six month rotation out of country.

Truly enjoyed looking at the videos and the photos of the standoff at the White House. The guards looked really worried, at least from the pictures.

I see no downside... He will be hosting prime time pressors about how a month of the illegals cost would build the wall etc... Ask the majority of people if the remember the last shutdown. They wont

Yes - I have volunteered for numerous Honor Flights and couldn’t care less if there are any park employees there in D.C.
If it’s barricaded needlessly, THEN it’s an issue.

"Do you believe Ryan and his RINO cohorts would vote to overturn a Trump veto of a spending bill that does not include Wall funding? Not in a million years. It would be suicide by stupidity."

No, but I think Ryan and McConnell are quite capable of passing a CR without any wall funding and sending it to Trump to see if he will veto it and then just sitting back and watching a shutdown while blaming Trump for any consequences.

Yeah, they are that low.

But it’s very easy for Trump to turn it around on them.

A majority of the voters want the wall. If Trump vetoes, the Republicans in Congress will hold that bag. And Trump would make it very heavy indeed.

Obama had his Federal goon squad shutting down businesses that were NEAR a national park and they even were so petty as to close public highway observation areas where you could see into a national park! It was absurd!

As this Saturday’s potential government shutdown looms, and the assorted media outlets craft their narrative about it being a reflection of Trump’s failure, as well as being a harbinger of the Apocalypse, this article has a lot of good information to keep in mind. I say, bring on the shutdown. I’d like to see the President refuse to sign a budget that doesn’t include funding for the border wall.

I totally agree with you . . . shut it down if it doesn’t get signed.

Watch out for Paul Ryan who will betray Trump in a New York minute. Ryan has said his number one priority is to avoid a shutdown, but he also opposes border wall funding and says that health care reform will have to wait.

I think the uniparty avoided shutting down the government with Obama because they agreed with his budgets. Trump, on the other hand...

It is to trump’s advantage to shut down the Government and keep it shutdown for as long as possible. It means Trump thou selective funding can close any government agency he wants.

Effectively lay off any government employee he wants.

Trump can take a shut down and turn it into a booming economy, with no destructive government to hold it down. It is the perfect policy tool for the Trump Administration. If the democrats want something back they will have to negotiate something else for it.

Seems to me a GOP-controlled Congress and President being unable to avoid a government shutdown would be extremely embarrassing and not good in any way.

RE:”Seems to me a GOP-controlled Congress and President being unable to avoid a government shutdown would be extremely embarrassing and not good in any way.”

He dropped his ‘line in the sand’ over having funding the Wall in the budget pretty fast.

The MSM will try to make Americans blame Trump and ‘feel the pain’ of the shutdown. Remember Obama specifically ordered agencies to make the shutdown uncomfortable - closing down the WW2 Memorial area, for example.

I think the shutdown could play out though as the author suggests. If they are ‘non-essential’ jobs, why do we need them at all?

I also believe the border wall is an issue of NATIONAL SECURITY. Trump could use DoD money to build the wall as a defense emergency, Congress be damned.
