Poll: Evan McMullin beats Sen. Orrin Hatch in head-to-head matchup

SALT LAKE CITY — Former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin would beat Sen. Orrin Hatch in a head-to-head matchup for the U.S. Senate, a new poll shows.

The Centrist Project, which is recruiting candidates to run for Senate and state legislatures in 2018, commissioned the survey to gauge Utahns' opinions on several issues and the viability of an independent candidate in the upcoming Senate race.

The poll by JMC Analytics found 33 percent of residents would vote for McMullin, 29 percent for Hatch and 11 percent for an unnamed Democrat if the election were held today. Another 10 percent favored someone else, and 17 percent were undecided.

Asked whether Hatch deserves to be re-elected or if it's time for someone new, only 21 percent of Utahns chose the seven-term senator, while 68 percent want someone new, according the poll.

JMC Analytics polled 625 registered Utah voters over landlines and cellphones on March 18 and March 20. The survey has a 3.9 percent margin of error.

Hatch, R-Utah, has said he plans to run for an eighth term in 2018 barring any unforeseen circumstances. He raised $1.3 million in the first three months of this year and ended March with $3.5 million in his campaign account. The senator spent more than $10 million to win his last re-election in 2012, which he had said would be his last.

McMullin, a former CIA operative and BYU graduate, said last month that it's possible he would challenge Hatch or Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

Chaffetz, who had toyed with taking on Hatch, announced Wednesday that he won't seek re-election or run for any office in 2018. He also hasn't ruled out resigning before his term ends.

The five-term congressman said he always intended to get in and serve and get out.

No poll on who would win a scintillating race between McMuffin and Mitt Romney?

before we all jump on the “support this guy because he isn’t the other guy” bandwagon, do we actually know anything about his politics?

because I seem to remember a couple of guys named scott brown and marco rubio . . . just to name a couple off the top of my head

Probably not much at all, this being a rigged poll. Remember how some were producing the Eggster would beat PRESIDENT Trump in Utah, when it turned out not even to be close.

McMullin still owes $650K from his failed Presidential bid...I think the ‘rule of holes’ should apply here.

So now the Left hides under the table (behind the scenes as “staff”) in a “centrist” political project. Another attempt to deceive, to publicly lose the Left label behind a smokescreen of Liberal “centrists”.

MCmuffin, Hatch, Romney. I would rather they stick with Hatch at least he won’t be living out his term.

I call bull$hit on this poll. Unless UT Democrats endorse McMuffin as their candidate, he ain’t going to get that sort of % of the vote. He only got 21% running for President in the state and he’s not going to magically double it, especially with his far-left stances and actions.

His unusually high numbers sound like BS to me as well, but it wouldn't surprise me if he does well against Hatch thanks to simply being the "Not Senator Hatch" candidate and gets a combination of 1) the low-information voters (duhhhhhhhh.... there's another name on the ballot besides Hatch, think I'll vote for whoever that guy is) and 2) the cut-off-your-nose-spit-in-your-face wing of Tea Party who will endorse "anyone" but Hatch.

We saw similar levels of grassroot "support" for worthless RINO candidates like Carole Strayhorn and Liz Cheney simply because of the entrenched GOP status quo candidate they were running against (Rick Perry and Mike Enzi, respectively). Too many stupid voters don't care if the challenger is to the LEFT of the incumbent they want to get rid of.

If McMuffin DOES have a chance against Hatch, I'd have to hold my nose and endorse Hatch just to make sure his slimey challenger doesn't get in power.

That being said, Hatch vs. McMuffin is a joke and I hope some decent candidate runs.

Hatch does need to retire, although the prospect of the execrable turds McMuffin and Scum Willard as successors make his staying another 6 years palatable. Besides, now that he is Senate President Pro Tempore, that usually gives them carte blanche to remain in office until they’re carried out feet-first.

This poll is preposterous.

Trump held on to most of the GOP base but INSTITUTION Orrin Hatch at only 29% and losing to indie McMuffin? Give me a break. I’d put the prospects of a successful indie bid at 0%.

Hatch should retire but I won’t be broken up in he doesn’t (I don’t think he will). I’m content with avoiding a down grade.
