United Airlines just can’t seem to fly under the radar.

A Utah man and his fiancée say a U.S. Marshal booted them Saturday from a Houston flight en route to their Costa Rica wedding after they changed seats without permission — the latest in a string of negative headlines for the bedeviled company.

There is something wrong with United Airlines.

Something deeply wrong and it's been around for a long time.

I’ve observed the same thing although I fly so infrequently these days. I flew a lot starting in the early 1960’s into the ‘70’s and never had a problem with stewardesses. Most of them were in their 20’s and in full bloom. In December of 1971, I caught the United night flight from LAX to PHL coming off my four years of active duty. The commuter flight from San Diego was late to LAX and United arranged for an airport car to drive me and my seabag from my arriving flight across a mile of tarmac to the waiting United 707. I was in my dress blues and the head stewardess arranged for my seabag to be stowed and, when I gave her my ticket, she told me that there were a few vacancies up front and gave me a prime First Class seat. Nowadays, there are no more stewardesses. The flight attendants are typicaly females in that funky pre-post menopausal age and the males mostly see to have their own hormonal problems. Lake of testosterone. I don’t mind them as waiters—oops, sorry, “servers”— but on a flight I’d prefer to turn back the clock and have some flirt-worthy eye candy to serve me my coffee, water and nuts.

“These passengers repeatedly attempted to sit in upgraded seating which they did not purchase and they would not follow crew instructions to return to their assigned seats,” the airline said.

According to United and their power crazed waitresses.

Oh, that makes sense.
Still seems kinda harsh to boot them off, but once the Air Marshals get involved, I'm sure they have protocols to follow. Sounds like they were trying to take advantage, and did not take NO for an answer. Hey, if you're going to your wedding, maybe pay the upgrade and don't poach seats!

Agreed.

This is not the whole story.

I agree. Feminism turned them into grumpy prison wardens. If you get their attention, they will make your flight uncomfortable.

I read that, they were still in economy.

I know, the airlines have started playing games even with economy seats, charging a little more for this one, a little less for that. Its annoying. I don’t think its all airlines, but certainly United. If you’ve bought a ticket on line lately you see it when you reserve your seat.

Like I say, many times on a half empty plane, we’ve swapped seats to make ourselves more comfortable, and on a normal airline with normal staff, that isn’t a problem.

Years ago I’ve seen freeloaders move into first class seats after the door closes if they were empty. Not so much anymore, as all 1st class seats are filled.
Some people think they are entitled, and try to take what is not theirs.
Maybe it’s time to bring back the “slapjack”.
A leather strap with a lead persuasion device.
Always brought the ner-do-wells into compliance

“Once the plane is in the air, we have often changed seats. Big deal.”

Yeah, I’d figure it’s nothing to make a fuss about, it’s not as if any passengers are going to be boarding mid-air. Like changing seats on a city bus.

I was on a United flight from chitcago to Cincinnati yesterday and some attention whore tried to start it with the attendant. She wanted to sit next to her daughters who were in a bulkhead seat. She couldn’t understand why she would have to pay extra for more leg room if the seat was empty anyway.
I felt like standing my 6`5” body up and telling her off. My kids were along and I didn’t want handcuffed in front of them.
The funny part was when we arrived at the Gate to get on this flight these same three platinum blonds were laying on the floor in the middle of the waiting area sleeping off spring break.I had commented to my wife that it looked like a grey hound station.
Anyway, the flight atendent had to spend ten minutes explaining airline policy to this dim-wit and did a great job keeping her cool.

I like to sit up in the cockpit since there's a great view from there, but every time I try that they kick me off. Those creeps.

Should they give the roomy empty seats to the taller people? I want a line up. Who is tallest on the flight?

Back then, you’d actually get a meal (of sorts - it was airline food, after all).

But, yup. Oh, for the days when women were women and so were the stewardesses.

Yes, I’ve noticed they seem to block out “personal time” on a long flight to gossip and relax. God help you if you put on your light to ask for something during their downtime. And I mean in first class, too.
