U.S. May Launch Strike If North Korea Reaches For Nuclear Trigger

The U.S. is prepared to launch a preemptive strike with conventional weapons against North Korea should officials become convinced that North Korea is about to follow through with a nuclear weapons test, multiple senior U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.
North Korea has warned that a "big event" is near, and U.S. officials say signs point to a nuclear test that could come as early as this weekend.
The intelligence officials told NBC News that the U.S. has positioned two destroyers capable of shooting Tomahawk cruise missiles in the region, one just 300 miles from the North Korean nuclear test site.
American heavy bombers are also positioned in Guam to attack North Korea should it be necessary, and earlier this week, the Pentagon announced that the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group was being diverted to the area.
The U.S. strike could include missiles and bombs, cyber and special operations on the ground.
The danger of such an attack by the U.S. is that it could provoke the volatile and unpredictable North Korean regime to launch its own blistering attack on its southern neighbor.
"The leadership in North Korea has shown absolutely no sign or interest in diplomacy or dialogue with any of the countries involved in this issue," Victor Cha, the Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies told NBC News Thursday.

The Cold War doctrine of mutually assured destruction doesnt work with lunatics like KJ Un and the Iranian mullahs. Action is necessary.
Actually, the evidence is quite the opposite. Despite rhetoric that is over-the-top in its statement of intent to do harm to other countries, neither country has been particularly expansionist nor particularly damaging to anyone but their own people (yes, both have done things covertly, but nothing to match their rhetoric). The primary reason? They know that if they went too far, they would cease to exist.
Contrary to popular misconception, dictators are generally risk-averse, at least when dealing with more powerful neighbors.
Action is not necessary. Except, perhaps, to rescue the millions of people living in absolute poverty and crushing oppression. But it is not necessary for preventing him from doing anything suicidal, because the evidence is pretty clear that he knows where the line is, and, at least until now, hasn't overstepped it.

true enough... we don’t have a single one. BUT,
we do have over three thousand and all of them are mirv’ed...
perhaps we could break them down for field ordnance/artillery use ...
like any good self cleaning oven... you don’t have to clean up afterwords! A damp cloth is all that is needed...
:-)
of course we don’t actually HAVE them... one of our allies has them.. and will loan them to us for a small fee....

O, Kerry, and Hillary made quite a mess of foreign policy. The media covered for them every way they could but things really are a mess in some serious locations. There is need for some tidying up.

The US is concerned because satellite imagery reveraled preparations under way for what could be a major underground nuclear weapons test at Punggye-ri, the North Korean nuclear test site. Like the underground tests the USA held at the Nevada Test Site for many years?
We have thousands of deliverable nuclear weapons and the NORKS don't even have one yet so why even think about getting into another unnecessary war?
Concentrate on the domestic agenda and let the pompous fat boy rattle his saber.

The Norks aren't preparing a missile. It's to be an underground test.
This is something the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) is suited for.

And a big one at that. The New York Times web site just posted pictures from DigitalGlobe showing a massive earth removal project near the test site over the past three months, an indication that what ever bomb the North Koreans plan to test could be a very high yield device, my guess a multistage thermonuclear bomb with a yield between 200 and 300 KT.

I’m in Kumamoto . Today is the 1 year anniversary of the first of 2 killer earthquakes to strike our city . 28 hours later we got an equal 7+ magnitude quake . My wife was in the bath at the time , and her first thought when the 1st hit was that NK had nuked us . Tomorrow is Kim’s grandpa’s birthday anniv. Hoping he won’t use that day to send a nuke over here on the same day we got hit by giant quake .
