The U.S. is prepared to launch a preemptive strike with conventional weapons against North Korea should officials become convinced that North Korea is about to follow through with a nuclear weapons test, multiple senior U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.
North Korea has warned that a "big event" is near, and U.S. officials say signs point to a nuclear test that could come as early as this weekend.
The intelligence officials told NBC News that the U.S. has positioned two destroyers capable of shooting Tomahawk cruise missiles in the region, one just 300 miles from the North Korean nuclear test site.
American heavy bombers are also positioned in Guam to attack North Korea should it be necessary, and earlier this week, the Pentagon announced that the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group was being diverted to the area.
The U.S. strike could include missiles and bombs, cyber and special operations on the ground.
The danger of such an attack by the U.S. is that it could provoke the volatile and unpredictable North Korean regime to launch its own blistering attack on its southern neighbor.
"The leadership in North Korea has shown absolutely no sign or interest in diplomacy or dialogue with any of the countries involved in this issue," Victor Cha, the Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies told NBC News Thursday.

“Well, looks like we didn’t get dressed up for nothing” :)
there’s not a single piece of evidence or even a sentence in that article to substantiate the headline...BS fake news from the alt left...
Why have we gotten so involved in world affairs?
The US is concerned because satellite imagery reveraled preparations under way for what could be a major underground nuclear weapons test at Punggye-ri, the North Korean nuclear test site. It appears the preparations are for an underground test of a very powerful bomb, possibly a 200-300 KT multistage thermonuclear weapon, the type that could cause enormous damage or massive EMP effects.
In Episode II of Kill-the-chicken-and-make-the-monkey-watch this week, DJT has the Praetorian Guard of Kim saying uh-uh, no way, I ain’t goin’ down in no tunnel or cave with that idiot.
Only solution is to off him.
The Cold War doctrine of mutually assured destruction doesn’t work with lunatics like KJ Un and the Iranian mullahs. Action is necessary.
The media seems to have their own agenda.
The scuttlebutt is that sanctions, specifically dealing with their oil imports, are going to get tightened up some more.
This is actually getting scary. I can just see the Fat Idiot shooting conventional missiles at Seoul, which would be really really bad. Equivalent to someone shooting missiles into New York City.
This is most likely calculated by the Trump administration who were left some major problems in foreign policy. Peace through strength. Deal with the security issues up front forcefully and perhaps people take you more serious in the future and you don’t have to lift a finger.
I hope that is right.
If he shoots off one that big, there will be leakage and China will probably march.
That’s a big weapon and I’m not sure the tunnel can contain it.
To me, the prudent thing to do would be to let him trigger China’s ire, and then sit back and relax while China mops up.
I am fed up with “ifs”.
Since when is keeping the U.S. from getting nuked a world affair? Japan says he may also have the capability of arming missiles with sarin.
China and Russia have truly turned against him.
I expect him to be ‘mostly’ peacefully removed, soon after the bomb test.
Who is our cartoonist? We need a visual of a spoiled kid out in the next door driveway lighting off bottle rockets while the Dad next door,(Uncle Sam), comes outside with a rolled newspaper to smack his A$$!
As you can see from this picture from Drudge, this whole thing is a big joke to the NK.
Load the Tomahawks with the 400kt payloads or the neutron payloads.
400 Tomahawks with neutron payloads could clear the artillery troops near the DMZ...or at least many of them.
Most countries agree we’re at the end of diplomacy. We’ve put enough pressure in place for dprk to deter a launch but if we see imminent activity before or after USA will respond.
