A key witness to the alleged gas attack on Idlib, Syria, was tried in the UK for kidnapping journalists with a jihadist group.
Described in his Twitter profile as a “Medical doctor trained in the UK” and “Humanitarian aid worker”, Shajul Islam was a key eyewitness on the ground during the attack, offering himself for media video calls and uploading mobile phone footage of victims which was shared thousands of times

Islam, from Stratford, East London, was interviewed by a number of mainstream broadcasters, including NBC News, but none notified viewers that he had previously been tried in the UK for terrorism offences and struck off the medical register by the General Medical Council after a confidential tribunal.

Assad denied any involvement all right.

US media did not report this.

“But why didn’t he immediately publicly deny any involvement? He should have been screaming to the heavens that he didn’t order it. Unless I missed it.”

If you search ‘assad denies chemical attacks’ there are a bunch of hits about the state denying it, but I’m not seeing any actual quoted statements or alternate explanations directly from the Syrian state. There seem to be a lot of secondary reporting saying they think they might have hit some cached chem weapon in a bombing run or something.

How many are supposed to have died in the attack?

I don’t have a problem with the air strike itself, because it was the only way to explain to Putin that he should exert a reasonable level of control on his ally. Trump essentially told Russia that Assad can kill all the citizens he desires, but just don’t use chemical weapons. In terms of a deeper involvement, then our troops would have to shoot four ways at the same time, because everyone would be against them.

Russia under Putin is pursuing a course Stalin, Khrushchev, or Brezhnev of the old Soviet Union would never have approved. Their allies always received prior generation technology; whether it be tanks, missiles, cryptography, etc. They would never have helped Iran develop an atomic bomb or given them an air defense system they could not easily defeat.

I totally agree with the writer because it makes good sense.

Don't forget, he put a lot of distance between himself and Putin as well.

All good reasons.

I agree w/ the writer. Very unlikely Assad did this. He would be an idiot to provoke the west with such a move.

Most likely they hit a weapons depot which contained the chemicals. Likely the rebels even moved them there to set up the whole thing.

Brilliant analysis.

Do Tomahawks require an expensive refurb every ten years? Maybe Mattis found some use em or loose em getting close to their expiration dates laying around.

Yes, he knows how to set the chess board to his advantage. You have to appreciate Trump’s ability to send a message. Not just one, two, or even ten, Tomahawks, 50, though one didn’t quite make it.

Not sure what I think yet. Still studying the situation. Fox put up a map of the routes the planes took as they were tracked to drop the weapons. But I am with you that Assad would be an idiot to use chem weapons. At this point, I think some of the story, or the real part of the story, is not public yet. The reported facts do not add up to me.

Well Karl, we can always go into Syria and seize those WMD, just like we did in Iraq- look how well that worked out

I’m sure T Rex can take some nice pictures up to the UN and show thm the proof, he can even use Colin Powells briefing slides and change the names. Then the UN will give us a “resolution” and the UK will dutifully send some aircraft and marines and even France might fly some sorties- Canada might sent their airplane too
Bada Bing

The West takes out Syria for democracy motherhood and apple pie.

About 50,000 boots on the ground should do it- bring Petraeus back in, he’s been hanging around with his zipper zipped (we think) just waiting for a job

except whoops Russia
No ally this time, not even passive
Putin might have given up Assad for Trump but it doesn’t look like he was given a choice
Vlad hasn’t ginned up much assymetrical warfare yet but he can play 4d chess as well as the next guy. Stand by.

During the campaign we deplorables were fed the line that Trump was the anti-Bush and Hillary was dangerous because she would take us to WW3

Now we got Bush version 3.0 with less personal military experience, and a bunch of Clintonistas lurking around the WH staff

Hell Ivanka Trump’s ethics lawyer is Jamie Gorelick. mistress of disaster, architect of the Intel failure that led to 911, and she sits in the shadow of the girl-women who sits at the right hand of Trump. Smarter and prettier than Chelsea Clinton but politically almost the same stripes

What does that tell us
