Mattis to brief Trump on options for military action in Syria

Defense Secretary James Mattis will brief President Trump on military options against Syria, CBS News' David Martin reports, after a chemical attack in northern Syria, believed to have been carried out by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, killed at least 72 people, many of them children.

Mr. Trump is going to be briefed by Mattis in Florida on some options, one of which would be cruise missile strikes from U.S. Navy ships.

At a news conference Wednesday, the president called the chemical attack in Syria was a "horrible, horrible thing" that "crossed a lot of lines for me." He also acknowledged, "It is now my responsibility," though he did not indicate what actions he would consider.

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley condemned the United Nations and threatened U.S. could retaliate unilaterally against Syria.

"When the United Nations consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action," Haley said. "For the sake of the victims, I hope the rest of the council is finally willing to do the same." She called the attack "a new low, even for the barbaric Assad regime" and went on to say that "Russia cannot escape responsibility."

Someone needs to explain our vital national security interest in the 3rd world Syrian deserts. There ain’t one. Stay out and shut off refugees.

Another nothing burger from the MSM & the never-trumpers.

They claim to know so much & are proven wrong every time.

Trump will do what he thinks is best for the country. His enemies, foreign & domestic will just get angrier & I will laugh harder.

Big mistake. We are rushing into this without being certain of the facts. Assad has been sitting pretty; it makes very little sense that he would have done this. Even if he did it (which seems both unlikely and unproven), how do we benefit from striking him? What would the purpose of striking against him be - to kill him? to weaken him? What is the end game for any of this? I fear that the President is being manipulated. But he’s a smart guy so I hope that is not the case.

Trump may be just playing along with the MSM/neocon/statist game for now.

I don’t know.

If he gets involved in Syria in any serious way, he will regret it. There is no benefit to the USA, the American public have no interest, and he will open himself to every “no blood for oil” Democrat/Leftist meme used for the last 5 decades.

All we have atm is the MSM running its sump.

They lie. A lot.

We won’t know what any meeting is about until someone who actually knows lays it out.

Until then, please keep in mind...

The MSM lies. A lot.

I was watching Fox News and they had some Dem supporter who wanted action.

This is just like that photo of the little boy. I guess there were a couple of them.

It pulls at the heartstrings. But I am tired of the U.S. shedding precious American blood in distant conflicts. If we start going in there, it may come to boots on the ground. And what if they have equipment that can bring down our planes?

If Democrats are in favor of it, you know it’s a bad idea.

Maybe we can take a break from being the world’s policemen and focus on the many problems at home.

Not as much as the guys coming home with no arms and legs will.

But think of all the patriotic flyovers at NASCAR races and football games we will get as everyone stands to pay homage to all that "Land Of The Free - Home Of The Brave" bulls***.

So true. Dems will be screaming ‘Blood for oil”. problem is they should have let US explore oil opportunities many years ago. The real option, which should have been done long ago, is to make the entire middle East one big Parking Lot!

Call me an optimist, but my thinking is Trump will use this whole thing to state that Congress must authorize war.

So much for not signaling your thinking or plans.

But really, at this point, Trump seems to have been rolled on almost everything.

Oh, and plus, isn’t Russia an ally of Syria?

Yes, by all means, let’s alienate Russia for no benefit to the U.S.

I hope what he was saying during the press conference yesterday was some chess move and nothing more.

I have a hunch we are really looking at a secondary explosion. Why use a chemical round to destroy a building? A quick draw decision is a bad one. We could be taken in by a Polliwood type production.
