British Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday insisted that she would "never" allow Gibraltar to slip from British control against the wishes of Gibraltarians as the issue took centre-stage in early Brexit wranglings. May told Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo that "we will never enter into arrangements under which the people of Gibraltar would pass under the sovereignty of another state against their freely and democratically expressed wishes."
Her comments came as Spain pledged it would not close its border post-Brexit with the 6.7-square-kilometre (2.6-square-mile) British overseas territory on the southern tip of Spain.

Another good thing about Franco, is that he resisted Nazi pressure to take Gibraltar from Britain.
One thing to consider is that if the Republicans won the Spanish Civil War, the Nazis may very well have invaded Spain and taken Gibraltar in the process.

Worth repeating...
+1. This is an odd... rock to die on.
It wont be as easy as the Falklands; impossible to take back if overrun.
Britain has nukes. Spain doesn’t.
GB will have go to war over it because it is extremely important. The only problem is that their Navy is in shambles and Commons is full of buffoons.
Franco wanted to storm Gibraltar, but realized it wasn’t worth losing the Canary Islands (which he couldn’t defend).

“Spain pledged it would not close its border post-Brexit with the 6.7-square-kilometre (2.6-square-mile) British overseas territory on the southern tip of Spain.”
British Gibraltar closes their side. Problem solved.
Spain should ask Argentina how the Brits act when they don’t want to give back property.
Why would Spain want it?
If them crazy African neighbors are going to invade; wouldn’t Tarifa be a lot closer??
I have been to Gibraltar. It is like Disneyland but it’s the whole city. It’s magical awesome cool. The Spanish could set up their own Gibraltar ten miles up the coast if they wanted to. However they couldn’t because they’re Spaniards and they would screw it up. And if the Spaniards took over Gibraltar it would be just another s***** hellhole within 50 years
