North Korean Defector Tells Lester Holt ‘World Should be Ready’

SEOUL, South Korea — A senior North Korean defector has told NBC News that the country's "desperate" dictator is prepared to use nuclear weapons to strike the United States and its allies.

Thae Yong Ho is the most high profile North Korean defector in two decades, meaning he is able to give a rare insight into the secretive, authoritarian regime.

According to Thae, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is "desperate in maintaining his rule by relying on his [development of] nuclear weapons and ICBM." He was using an acronym for intercontinental ballistic missiles — a long range rocket that in theory would be capable of hitting the U.S.

I suspect Mr. Thae is doing more than boosting his value as a defector. I think he has a bigger plan. That is, he wants to return to N. Korea as a part of victorious faction, and become part of top leadership under a regime that will follow after the current one is gone.

If Kim ever actually ordered an attack or the launch of missiles with intent, he would immediately be murdered by his privlidged elite inner circle or Chinese operatives close to him. His inner circle understands better than anyone that in the event of war their elite status would be shattered and they and their families would most likely be dead. Neither they nor the Chinese would allow Kim’s delusions and fantasies to lead to their destruction.

So he was paying attention to what we did in Iraq.

No surprise here. The defector says that Kim Jong Un would use nukes should there be an invasion of North Korea. Well, sure. Like any dictator, Kim would do anything to hang onto power for as long as possible.

Who would invade North Korea (with tanks, etc.) anyway? Only China can get rid of Kim. And only a quick palace coup would work. No tanks. No nukes.

Kim must be taken out, pure and simple. But only to the extent that the replacement alternative would be sustainable and a major improvement, i.e. those that would sue terms for peace with the USA.

He will build it, but never use it. Unless his back is to the wall.

I don’t care about him. I don’t really care about their gulags.

There is a lot of saber rattling. We are going to end up in a mess that will make WW I look like a series of genius moves.

Lots of people will be dead, but at least Raytheon will have a good quarter.

It’s 2017. Why does NBC News think they have to explain what ICBM means?

As for South Korea, is it just me or does the fact that they legally removed their President for cause speak to the rule of law in a democracy? This is not a sign of instability.

I think this is fear-mongering. I agree with the poster who suspects the defector has personal political goals.

As does NBC News.

The majority of their ‘audience’ doesn’t know icbm from hdmi. Or any thing else except more entitlements for that matter.

If ever a preemptive strike would be justified this is it.

Sounds like Thae Yong Ho is the Korean translation for "Captain Obvious."

Is there any country with a nuclear arsenal that wouldn't use it in this scenario?

Because they know their audience?

Because there is a political vacuum in S. Korea and the pro-North left could fill it. I believe that Thae has his personal agenda to promote but this is not something he can whip up all on his own. He is just riding the wave.

Snowflakes don't even know what Soviet Union was. I doubt that most of them know any history before 2000.

I suppose I’ll take some flak for saying this, but part of this mess is due to Bush II. In 2002 Bush very publicly called Iraq, Iran, and North Korea “the axis of evil”. He then proceeded to invade Iraq.

Well, that was a heads-up to Iran and North Korea. Better develop nukes because you’re on the same list as Iraq.

I know that doesn’t explain everything. but if someone threatened me and two other people, then soon after whacked one of those other two...you can be sure I’d be arming up.

You are correct that the responsibility of this goes back decades.

However, when you find yourself in a situation it is more important to fix the problem, rather than spend time fixing the blame. There is plenty of time for that later.

We are not going to nuke them. We are not going to invade them. We have no trade with them to stop. They are isolated as it is. I guess we would try to infiltrate and kill the generals and Kim. But that is not easy either.

The best way to tame a little shitty dog that begs for attention is to just not even make eye contact.

Put a ship on the coast and shoot down any missile that leaves their airspace. Corrupt their computer systems.

But that’s about all we can do.

China can slap him down.

We cannot. We shouldn’t.
