Border wall funding solved: GOP pushes for 2% fee on money immigrants send home

A group of House Republicans on Thursday introduced the first major bill to fund President Trump’s border wall, saying the government could collect billions of dollars by imposing a 2 percent fee on all the money Mexicans and other immigrants send back home. Estimates vary, but remittances from those in the U.S. to their relatives back home could top $130 billion a year. A 2 percent tax could net more than $2 billion a year if it applied to all money regardless of who’s sending it. “This bill is simple — anyone who sends their money to countries that benefit from our porous borders and illegal immigration should be responsible for providing some of the funds needed to complete the wall,” Rep. Mike Rogers, Alabama Republican, said in a statement. “This bill keeps money in the American economy, and most importantly, it creates a funding stream to build the wall.” Mr. Rogers and Rep. Lou Barletta of Pennsylvania are leading the effort. Mr. Trump has vowed to make Mexico foot the bill for his border wall, but Mexican authorities have said they won’t play along. Left without a funding source, the president has said American taxpayers will pick up the tab for now, and he’ll look for ways to soak Mexico in the long run.

Works for me. In fact I’d support turning off the welfare for illegals and they will self deport.

Great idea. Many countries have restrictions on transferring wealth out of the country.

Should be 20%. 2% only makes sense if you identify the senders, determine immigration status...then confiscate the assets of and deport the illegals.

Contract a private company to collect it for a fee to the Fed government...otherwise a new organization will have to be built...I.e., more government oversight and more Dem voters.

No ... keep some of the old (then defunct?) IRS workers to do what they like to do ... take our money to give to the gummint.

Save a FEW bucks on the unemployment rolls

Great! I remember I and others emailed the WH with this idea. Simple and effective, just a great idea.

Should be 10% minimum.

Other countries don;t like money fleeing their borders, so why should we?

Many times, no taxes were paid on the cash sent for remittances as the money was generated from under the table transactions.

2% western Union and other transfers.
2% from Checks drawn abroad from U.S banks.
Confiscation of undeclared cash at the border and detected in the mail.

It’s not perfect as they’ve now created a market for illicit banking methods, but it will sure make waves and dissuade some.

Fun with numbers

If one assumes $130 billion in remittences and 11 million illegal aliens in America then each and every illegal alien is sending $12,700 per year home
