A oil or chemical fire, perhaps in a rail car under the I85 bridge in downtown Atlanta between I75 ,400, and I85 caused a section of I85 to collapse 1 hour ago. Traffic is expected to stopped for weeks until the elevated highway section is replaced.

In a previous post of mine about the NJ I-78 tire fire it was 5+ months. Ouch.

Take the beltway around city..... which is always a good idea...

I285 sucks...but generally better than any other option. I live in Birmingham but travel through Atlanta frequently...Atlanta traffic sucks all the time. Can't imagine what it will be like while they fix it.

You’re kidding...right...Atlanta’s roads are already at a P95 loading factor....remove a major artery and the supporting routes will be toast...

I saw some local twitter posts that said the same thing. I think the insulation on the fiber cable might burn just as well as the conduit and there would be more of it on the reel since the conduits are of course hollow.

We had something similar happen at I-696 at Woodward ave in Detroit a few years ago. A Gas semi hit the median and evetually blew up, taking the overpass with it. Screwed up things for the better part of a year. I-696 is the trunk line Between I-94 and the western suburbs.

We had a tanker truck crash on an overpass on Malfunction Junction in Birmingham a few years ago...trashed the overpass and had to detour traffic on I65 southbound to local streets. The state put a bonus on finishing the work ahead of time. Don't remember the exact time but I think they had it going in less than two months. Blew my mind. Amazing what incentives will do.

Just made that trip 2 weeks ago. Use 285 to go around Atlanta & connect back onto 75 near the airport.

285 West is under construction and the interchange is already screwed up. Couple this with the new Braves stadium and the first Exhibition game of the year tomorrow and it’s going to be a nightmare.

That's why I've been laughing my ass off. 25 years ago I was recruited for a job in Atlanta. I told them they couldn't pay me enough money to live and work there!

We had a tank truck crash into a bridge overpass about Exit 112 on I-40 in NC about 18 years ago. The resultant fire caused the steel girders supporting the overpass to collapse.

It took about a year to completely repair the overpass.

I was a Census Taker in 1990. Because the driveway for one address had a chain across it, I had to walk to the top of a mountain to get the occupants to fill the questionnaire. Once there I discovered that there had been a house fire. Very large, fancy house. Later heard that the fire was “suspicious”. The thing I remember most was a steel “I” beam about 30 feet long with about an 18” high Web and 6” Flanges twisted like a piece of linguini.

From the heat of a residential fire.

A day without women.
A day without illegals.
A day without teachers.
A day without welfare bums.

A day without commuting workers will hurt the most.

The lower floors of the twin towers collapsed W/O the heat of a fire being upon them.

Take 400 to the North Springs MARTA station. Ride south to Buckhead station. Walk a couple blocks to Lenox.

“Take me home, country roads....”

If enroute from Birmingham to Macon, are there any good, non-interstate roads. 280 to 80? I know there are some towns you have to go through, but there has to be at least one great Bar-B-Q place on that route. Better than the typical Interstate Exit Burger Barf!

Good luck!

Thank you. I understand fiber optic cables underneath the roadway.

No, he said it was SPOOLS of fiber optic cable or possibly CONDUIT - LOTS of it on one or more rail cars under the I-85 overpass.

What I cannot understand is why the RR didn't shunt the cars out from under the overpass - 50 to 100 yards would have prevented the whole problem.

Or why they didn't have an airport firetruck from Peachtree-DeKalb drive south on the northbound lanes to get to the fire with foam. That stupid boom firetruck was pumping water well short of the fire

They will need help.

With all respect to the “Dawgs”.... “Swift” is not a Georgia thing.

Have you sent them your business card?

The Bay Area crews were able to do it in six weeks. But they had crews working day and night.
