Drilling into Baltimore's population loss
Baltimore Sun ^ | March 29, 2017

Reaction to Sunday's column on Baltimore's distressing loss in population ranged from genuine empathy to snarky glee. Some citizens took the opportunity to complain about city life: A woman in Roland Park said she has a rat problem and that her water has been brown for months. I told her to get on her landlord about the rats and her City Council rep about the water — and to call me if she can't get no satisfaction.

It's a depressing development, the city losing some 6,700 residents during the 12 months that ended in July 2016. After years when the city's falling population finally seemed to stabilize, even grow modestly, raising expectations that maybe we had turned a corner, the drop in 2016 was a true bummer.

Too much of the city's housing stock has deteriorated, and there is not enough that's livable and affordable, Iyer says.

Hundreds of low-income Baltimore families, eligible for government rent subsidies, have moved to the surrounding counties because that's where they found decent, affordable housing.

That's why inclusionary housing — mandating real diversity in income levels among residents — needs to be constantly emphasized in Baltimore's redevelopment efforts.

The amazing thing is that anyone with a choice would remain within the Demoncrap Plantations. Although I must admit that my suburban county is getting all too “blue” in idiot governance as well.... may be time to move further out from the metropolis.

That is why they need to import more voters- I mean immigrants, or was it refugees?

nclusionary housing — mandating real diversity in income levels among residents — needs to be constantly emphasized in Baltimore’s redevelopment efforts...

That’ll keep the wealthy people there :)

Dopes.

Not a band trend. One of the reasons Trump won Michigan was that Detroit has been shrinking for years.

mandating real diversity in income levels among residents — needs to be constantly emphasized in Baltimore’s redevelopment efforts - this is a real winner, I mean, how could that possibly fail?

Who would not like to have a section 8, illiterate, unemployed, criminal, drug user and their flop house friends living next to you in a nice middle or upper middle class neighborhood. Heck, that is a sure fire way to motivate people moving from all over the country just to get in on that! /s

I had to move to Maryland from the Detroit suburbs about 8 years ago.

On my first day, while driving to my office in Baltimore, I heard of the radio that the Mayor had been convicted of theft for stealing gift cards meant for poor children for Christmas and buying stuff for herself.

All I thought was that it was just like Detroit, where it’s mayor was also doing time for corruption.

I think Baltimore may actually be worse and more corrupt. She was allowed to make a plea bargain AFTER conviction (Huh?) allowed to keep her pension, avoided jail time and couldn’t run for office for a few years. The idiot actually ran again last year.

Level the inner harbor and turn it into a refugee tent city. That will boost the numbers. Idiots.

Baltimore, Chicago, Dearborn, Ferguson, Minneapolis....seems there’s a common denominator between these cities. I just can’t remember what it is...

I'd be pissed if I were in the "surrounding" counties. Put a fence around the craphole and let the BLM white libs and the subsidized race-baiting minorities sort it out ala Lord of the Flies.

Mrs. Buckeye is from Detroit. Spent some time there when I was younger.

I affectionately refer to Baltimore as “Detroit with Crabcakes”.

LOL - blind liberal wrier thinks the population is leaving in droves because of bad landlords.

Yep, that’s the reason I don’t even think about walking through Baltimore at night - or any other time for that matter - it’s because of those greedy landlords.

Look Ma, there’s a landlord a commin’ - run for yo life!

My Dad was born in the slums of South Boston ("Southie",to natives) about 100 years ago,the son of destitute Irish immigrants. He was the youngest of seven and grew up in,and came of age in,the toughest of times.

He and his six siblings worked damn hard to get out of that cesspool and succeeded. They wound up in towns/areas like Belmont,Newton and Wellesley (all upper middle class suburbs of Boston).

People are leaving Baltimore for the same reason that my elders left Boston...they're smart, willing to work and want something *much* nicer than what even song writer Randy Newman recognized as a bottomless pit.

It wasn't rocket science then and it ain't now.

No mention of the Freddy Gray Riots and the burning of Baltimore. Typical progressive key fact free reporting.

I was referred to a guy who could come up with 1900 per month to rent a house from me. Since I needed to get it rented I gave it some thought and every way I looked at it it came up No. Anyone willingly following the Welfare Class rules is an idiot or a crook.

I suppose none of Baltimore’s problems can be traced to a summer of officially encouraged riots.
