House Intel Committee Cancels Meetings Amid Calls for Devin Nunes to Step Down
NBC News ^ | 03/28/2017 | Erik Ortiz

The House Intelligence Committee has scrapped the rest of its meetings this week as calls intensify for Chairman Devin Nunes to step down following his admission that he met with a secret source at the White House to review intelligence reports.

The decision to cancel the meetings was confirmed on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" by Rep. Jim Himes — among the Democrats on the committee demanding that Rep. Nunes recuse himself from the inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in last year's election.

Himes said an intelligence committee meeting Monday was canceled, as well as an open hearing set for Wednesday and an unrelated meeting Thursday.

"Not only has this investigation sort of had a shadow cast on it, but the committee's been put into suspended animation," Himes said.

Nunes told reporters Tuesday "the investigation continues," but declined to say whether he planned to recuse himself.

On Monday, Nunes' spokesman confirmed that the chairman met with a source at the White House grounds to look at reports purportedly showing President Donald Trump or his aides were "incidentally" swept up in foreign surveillance by American spy agencies.

Nunes, a California Republican who was a member of the Trump transition team, initially told reporters last week that he had seen such reports, but didn't elaborate on the source.

He's now under criticism for failing to tell the top Democrat on the intelligence committee about his White House visit. It's also unclear why Nunes would go to the White House to seek a secure location to view classified material when members of the committee said there are secure rooms at the Capitol.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer refused to comment Monday when asked why Nunes was on White House grounds.

Nunes should not step down.

They are only attacking him because he is Hispanic of Portugese descent.

The only other logical conclusion is that it’s because he has a political party affiliation. But so does every other member of the committee.

Nunes should step down? Why? Because some Democrat on the committee says so? That’s a laugh!

Since 2008, I had not seen any Dem step down.

Doesn’t guarantee a win. Getting your queen forked is the worst though.

Send in a battalion of US Marines to haul his ass back before Nunes Committee.

Bounty Island, an almost perfect hidey hole.

Wasn’t that a meeting that the rest of the committee was supposed to be at but they refused? What am I missing? Refusing to attend a meeting and then calling for the recusal of the guy who DOES attend because he was the only one there? Is that what’s going on? I can’t follow all of it and sort out what’s real and what’s fake. Too much real life to do.

The Dems will do anything to deep-six the illegal actions of those in the Obama administration, and instead of acting ethically and neutrally the “press” will do everything possible to abet them. Look how dishonest this NBC article is, trying to make people think that his source was one of Trump’s people instead of an intelligence official as he said it is. The way the Dems have been demagoging this Russian thing and trying to crush anyone exposing their own illegalities with the help of their personal propaganda corps is all very Soviet-era and Kafkaesque in style.

Why the hell did they cancel the meetings? I swear every Republican must be neutered.

idk, but my guess is that there are too many high ranking people caught up in the dirty dealing.

What do you do when other congressmen and senators that you though were good guys turn out to be pedophiles or on the dole from foreign anti-American interests? What do you do if you think the cops are dirty? Who do you arrest first if there are over 100 guilty parties? Who do you trust? I’ve read in various places (not claiming it’s reliable, but to me it’s plausible) that somewhere around 1/3 of congress is compromised. How do you even handle the logistics of a huge number of arrests, to say nothing of the political fallout?

Remember, too, that we aren’t talking about arresting a bunch of illegals or drug dealers or gang-bangers. We’re talking about arresting dozens or hundreds of the most powerful people in the country.

Imagine that you had just read a list of your coworkers who had committed serious felonies including capital crimes and pedophilia, people that you regarded as friends. Imagine that you were now had the responsibility to have them arrested and tried, convicted and sentence to very long prison sentences. How shaken would you be? What would you do?

I’d like to think that I’d do the right thing and turn them all in. But that doesn’t mean it would be easy. I’ve had to fire a few people in my life, and I learned that it’s a lot easier when you don’t have the authority to complain that so-and-so ought to be fired, but when you are the person with the authority, the responsibility weighs a lot heavier.

I’m not saying this is an excuse for those with the authority not to act. I’m just saying that I think there could be the issue of shock and the issue of logistics. And possibly other issues that haven’t occurred to me yet.

Great list, thanks for posting, and thanks to LC.

We need to counter all the things on this list as much as we possibly can. Posting conservative comments on lib sites, writing letters to the editor.

One of the most important things that I do is that on a personal level, when I hear liberals spreading lies, I speak up and don’t let them get away with it.

if they want him to step down, he must have the goods

Yes, and everyone calling for him to stop appears guilty as sin.

IMO he’s not just close, he’s found it. That’s why I think he was pretty shaken himself. I’ll bet it was a shock to find out who was dirty and how dirty they were. I’ll bet it was a shock to find out how many were dirty.

I think that’s likely. There are a few other dirty Republicans as well.

I want them all exposed and prosecuted NOW. Regardless of what party they belong to.
