WASHINGTON – Ivanka Trump is planning a trip to Germany to attend a summit on the economic empowerment of women, a senior administration official said Sunday.

The first daughter was invited by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during Merkel’s recent White House visit, said the official, who was not authorized to discuss details of the trip by name and requested anonymity.

The W20 summit, a women-focused effort within the Group of 20 countries, will be in Berlin in late April. Ivanka Trump’s plans are still being worked out, but she hopes to study successful apprenticeship programs during her visit.

What exactly does “women empowerment” mean?

Do governments spend taxpayer money on “men empowerment” summits - or do men not need instructions on how to succeed?

Two observations:

1. There is a fundamental philosophical difference in the approach to education in America and Great Britain on the one hand and Germany on the other hand.

Traditionally in America the goal has been to create a renaissance man, a Thomas Jefferson or a John or John Quincy Adams who are thoroughly acquainted with virtually every discipline from the agents to the contemporary science of their time. So America creates generalists who then, presumably, specialize in a given discipline like law, medicine etc.

The German approach is quite different, even in the University system where it is possible to go right from high school directly into the study of medicine or law, as examples, without being exposed to the four years of undergraduate work which was originally designed to create our renaissance man.

The modern American university has gone so far off track, one example being this women's studies business, that we are squandering the time and the resources and converting learning institutions into indoctrination camps.

When one compares the effects, one has to acknowledge that the German system has produced a vibrant economy, a huge middle class, and also an export /mercantilist power house that makes it the number four exporter in the world.

However, America had led in innovation and still does to the degree our university system is bifurcated, that is, with hard science separated from BS BA courses. My feeling is that we should adopt much of the German system and try to reform our own so that we produce competent people for industry but still produce a citizenry capable of self-government.

2. Ivanka Trump might slide into a role reminiscent of Eleanor Roosevelt, which would not be a good thing for the country.

Women already own half the money and all the p”””” — how much more “empowerment” do they want?

Isn't Germany socialist?

And here I was thinking that socialism was a bad thing!

Did Germany finally figure out how to make socialism work?

Is America's middle class "yuge"?

Just wondering. I've never studied the German economy, but I've always assumed that the EU is a confederation of socialist "utopias", and to Hell with things like Free Speech, the right to keep and bear arms, and so on...

Isn't Germany socialist?

No, although it is more socialist than I like. There is some question whether it is more or less socialist than the USA.

And here I was thinking that socialism was a bad thing!

Hallelujah! You have finally uncovered an acorn.

Did Germany finally figure out how to make socialism work?

See above. I did not say German socialism worked, I described parts of their economy as being successful, which they are.

Is America's middle class "yuge"?

It has more people but then America has nearly 4 times the number of people as Germany. I think Germany has a larger middle class as a percentage. In any event, Donald Trump just ran an election on the proposition that the middle class in America was disintegrating. Nobody thinks that of Germany.

Because that is largely covered in the Gymnasium branch of the three-tiered German school system. For example, when I attended the German School Washington, our class received US high school diplomas after 10th grade - but then had another three years of general education to go to graduate with the Abitur.

Germany has much to much control over the EU countries. The EU has gone far beyond its original intention. It's almost a scam.

The UK did the right thing.

As far as Ivanka and this meet. Better to be there and be informed as to what other countries are trying to pull than sit home and just see what happens.

Yup - what she means by "empowerment" is government-mandated favoritism.

Maybe she's going to collect on the NATO bill that her father issued to Merkel the other day.

Was that before or after Ivanka’s dad handed Merkel the $300 billion bill for NATO services rendered?
