A big hit on Obamacare for Trump brings a businessman’s reaction: He’s moving on

President Donald Trump pauses in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington Friday, March 24, 2017, during an announcement on the approval of a permit to build the Keystone XL pipeline, clearing the way for the $8 billion project.

WASHINGTON

Donald Trump ran for president as a businessman who could make a deal. But on Friday, he failed to close the biggest deal of his young presidency.

And then, like a businessman, he moved on.

“That’s what you have to do in business if you fail,” said Rep. Roger Williams, a Texas Republican and, perhaps more relevantly in this instance, a car dealer. “You move on. You don’t worry about it. He’s going to move on.”

For Trump, House leaders’ decision not to vote on a Republican replacement for President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act when they realized they did not have the votes to pass it was his first legislative setback – on one of the biggest promises he’d made on the campaign trail.

Why do people keep saying it was a failure?

Because for the Democrats and Media (but I repeat myself), it serves the narrative that Trump is incompetent.

Also, for those who still harbor ill will towards President Trump—the NeverTrump and the lingering butthurt crowds who preferred someone else as the GOP nominee—it affords a golden opportunity to disparage a man who—secretly or not—they want to see fail anyway...

President Trump still has a lot of power over health care and Obamacare. A lot of ObamaCare was written to give the Secretary of Health and Human Services wide authority to make changes. Tom Price was the author of the current bill that just failed. He could take a lot of it and implement it tomorrow. That is not a great solution, and we would want to codify it into law before Trump leaves office, but it is something that can be done.

“Then why did Trump and Pence get behind it as much as they did?”

I think they made a deal with Ryan: go for it dude; we’ll support you, but if you fail, then you’re kaput.

I think they supported Ryan in public but not in private. I think President Trump knew this bill would never make it to his desk; even if the House passed it, the Senate was going to be a showstopper because Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and others were adamantly opposed to it.

I’m proud of President Trump. He gave the GOPe’s favorite boy the lead on this crucial legislation then backed him 100%. Shows he’s a team player even when the team is really struggling.

But if he wants to pass effective, popular legislation, he should consult with the conservative members of Congress first. Not last.

Tom Price did not write this thing. Just go look at what he wrote that made it to Obama’s desk for a veto and then try to tell me that.

Price didn’t have the time from confirmation to the roll-out to write that crap. I’m with others here that Trump is weeding the RINO pool in the swamp.

This is not being done we’re letting the media frame the argument.
This piece of legislation should be taken apart piece by piece by its opponents and be given a thorough public examination. The media should not be allowed to render its agenda driven explanation .Conservative reasons why this bill was killed must be brought out and made clear to the public mind.

Allowing the media and the one worlders do it is an exercise in frustration and futility

From all the information I am receiving it appears that Ryan is the one who failed at his job. He did not handle this piece of legislation well at all.

The Republicans have had seven years to get ready for this moment and they did nothing. Once they were in, Ryan threw together this piece of crap bill without working with conservatives and moderates to ensure it was something they could live with. He conned President Trump to throw his support behind something he really didn't have a lot of interest in. It was a disaster in the making from the very beginning, and the result should not surprise anyone. Lessons learned are that Ryan really isn't very good at being a leader and President Trump needs to be careful about what Ryan wants him to put his stamp of approval on.

No, no failure. The events transpired by Conservative design.

The Conservative minority kept Obamacare alive

Everyone always screams about this and that....grab the majority vote measures and go with it. You can go back and do a little more.....

What you can't do is dump the entire mess in one fell scoop.

As soon as we touch it, it becomes "Trump Care" and we own it. The Democrats wash their hands of it and when it falls apart (as it will) it becomes their 2018 campaign rallying cry.

Plus, the deal was always "repeal and replace" Obamacare, not "fix" Obamacare.

I agree with you as far as owning it.

Heard Cuomo here in NY went nuts over the possibility that Medicaid should be a State cost rather than a cost to the counties.

Except...I believe the state is the proper party to cover Medicaid in their state.
