It's nice now how the dictionary can be used to impart not-widely-held beliefs into their lexicon. Not even a use of ‘middle-eastern’ or the like.

I'd be more inclined to believe in this “British” tenet if someone could show me widespread usage throughout its history say before 1960. Seems awful ‘convenient’ to me
