And did they try to fire them directly at Japan, that’s what some of these stories are saying. Which dials it up and is not just a “failure” to me, at least.

If they launch their missiles from their East Coast and out to sea, they are launching toward Japan. Japan is shaped like a fence enclosing a body of water on the Eastern side of Korean Peninsula.
