If it explodes in the hold the plane might be able to land. It might not rip a hole in the passenger space.

If it is packed in a suitcase that is surrounded by another suitcases there might be enough insulation to absorb a considerable blast.

I am not an engineer but it seems possible to me

I’d like like to visit Guam and Midway and have the luxury of enjoying retired time. Are there tramp steamers still?

Iffy stuff, there. It might be possible to instruct baggage packers to keep laptops and such toward the middle of the cargo hold, but having watched that group numerous times, I would not stake MY life on ‘em.

As ISIS & AQ get more sophisticated, it’s not hard to visualize all battery powered electronics larger than a cell phone being banned from all commercial flights. A lot of people would be VERY unhappy. The “hit” on business people would be tremendous.
