Rich New Yorkers ask Cuomo to raise their taxes
New York Post ^ | March 21, 2017 | Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. — Some of the wealthiest New Yorkers are asking the state to raise their taxes.

Eighty people including George Soros, Steven Rockefeller and Abigail Disney wrote to lawmakers and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo saying they and other top earners should pay more to support schools, roads, bridges and programs to help poor and homeless residents of the state.

“Now is the time to invest in the long-term economic viability of New York,” the letter reads. “We need to invest in pathways out of poverty and up the economic ladder for all of our fellow citizens, including strong public education from pre-K to college. And, we need to invest in the fragile bridges, tunnels, waterlines, public buildings, and roads that we all depend on.”

The letter, a copy of which was obtained by the Associated Press, endorses a plan that would create new, higher income tax brackets for top earners to raise a projected $2 billion.

Many of those signing the letter are millionaires and all make more than $650,000, making them members of the state’s top 1 percent when it comes to income.

The proposal is being pushed by the Fiscal Policy Institute, a liberal-leaning economic think tank. . .

Sure they’re smart. And rich. So they can afford to hire the best tax lawyers abd accountants out there to ensure these folks don’t really have to put their money where their mouths are.

If they were really serious about this, as has been said, they’d just write a check to the state.

My very first thought -- they will get taxes raised on "the rich" which will be everyone with a NYC food cart on up, and then it won't apply to the 0.01% because they will have carefully written the legislation so that they can weasel out of it.

Following the ideas behind "A Day Without Latinos" and "A Day Without Women", it's interesting that nobody has proposed "A Quarter Without Taxpayers" for those of us who actually pay for all the stupid ideas that the politicians come up with.

If they want to pay more taxes, then they should be requesting a wealth tax, not an income tax.

Let New York put an 80% tax on anybody worth more than $100 million dollars. Then we will see just how committed they are to paying taxes.

It has never made sense that a Rockefeller and his dentist have the same marginal tax rate.

Why do you say this? Are you in favor of a progressive tax rate system?

"It has never made sense that a Rockefeller and his dentist have the same marginal tax rate."

WHAT? You're sounding like a liberal there, with all respect. If the dentist has an AGI of $200,000, and Rockefeller's is $20 million, Rockefeller will pay 100x the amount the dentist pays if they pay the same percentage rate. Do the math: $200,000 at 5% is $10,000; $20 million at 5% is $1 million. Clearly Rockefeller is paying WAY more in taxes than the dentist.

The libs will have you believe a flat-tax is "regressive", but it actually treats everyone equally. It's the progressive tax rate scheme (the more you make, the higher the rate) that already punishes the rich, and makes them all work overtime to come up with their own (legal) tax avoidance schemes.

And to the libs signing this letter, what are you waiting for? You can open your checkbook any time you like and write a check to the State. There is nothing that prevents you from paying more than your minimum, legally required taxes.

Why wait for a new tax--just send your checks to the state treasury today. Exactly!

This is just more fake empathy and posturing from liberals.

I rate it a big BS!

You too, Disney. Rockyfellers . . . Kennedys too. Clintons? Have we seen Slick and hilLIAR’s taxes? How bout you Chelsea? You’re such a BFD now that Expedia just NEEDS your EXPERTISE.

Cmon Left Wingers . . OUT with it.

just do it people! why write a letter and ask? why make it about your amount of taxes? if your heart were really about helping schools etc you would just do it.

These rich fools cannot even think clearly and have no real clue about generosity and genuinely helping others.
