Upon visit to Alaska I discussed the “stop a bear” question with park ranger. 12ga w slugs was the recommended medicine. This was for stopping a menacing bear, not shooting one at hunting ranges. For that I’d want NLT a .300 win mag and preferably .338 or .375

I rode on one of those "Tundra Buggy" vehicles. In 1997, my first wife and I went to Churchill as winners of the Molson Ice Polar Beach Party contest. We stood out on the open part at the rear while a HUGE polar bear was looking up at us. To see these magnificent beasts in the wild and up close was a sight to behold. But the tour guides stressed over and over that the bears were not cute and cuddly like the cartoon ones in the Coca-Cola commercials - they were predators and saw us as nothing more than their next meal.

Bears bears. Black bears are much smaller and a 30-06 is quite sufficient. However for brown bears I wouldn’t hunt with anything less than a truck mounted Browning M2.

What amazes me is that those guys will blast 4-5 rounds at a bull elephant. Shooting stance is everything.
My uncle had a hard time finding strong enough wood for the stock. English walnut, cut from the lowest part of the stump they can get a piece. Not cheap stuff. A few grand for basically a 3" X 6" chunk of wood long enough for the stock.

The thought of firing a rifle and having the stock come apart is pretty frightening to me.

IIRC there are basically no roads between Churchill and "civilization" so supplies have to be flown in.That's true. There are no roads to civilization (you can't drive to Winnipeg) but there is a train. When I went there in 1997, one of the locals told me that the rich people fly into Churchill and every one else takes the train.
It is indeed a very remote place, but it is one of forbidding beauty. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Unc would hold them around the corner of his house to test fire. Big man, incredibly strong. Amateur weightlifter in his younger days. Skinny nerd-child until he found Charles Atlas on the back of a comic book

Duh. We are in an Glaciation Period idiots. Normally the Earth has no ice at its poles. Only during the Ice Age periods does it occur. You better start stocking up for next winter cause you aint seen nothin yet.

See above. Jack O'Connor, hunter and author extraordinaire.
He was a big advocate for .270 Win - to the point of silliness sometimes, I think. But he was a good enough shot that he probably could have gotten along on most game with a .22 short.

I used to listen to the CBC on SW, aka RCI, and there was a piece on dinosaur hunters hitting Northern Canada during the Summer.
They were always in groups of at least five leaving the protected camping area, and there was at least one high-powered rifle in the group.
They found that PBs tended to leave groups of people alone, and the rifle was for any maverick PBs.

They will have to go ice fishing or seal hunting!
