Full Headline: Would YOU let a homeless person live in your backyard? Portland offers residents free tiny homes if they rent it to families who are on the street

....

Faced with an intractable homeless problem, officials in Portland are thinking inside the box.

A handful of homeless families will soon move into tiny, government-constructed modular units in the backyards of willing homeowners.

First the hut in the backyard. That won’t work so laws will be passed to require you to let them live in your home itself.

You get to keep the tiny house after five years. Any bets on what will happen in March 2022 when the first homeowner tries to evict his crazy drunk and move his lawn mower (either the Toro or Miguel who pushes it) into the house? Sorry, that’s your “forever bum” now.

What will the homeless do all day?

Same thing they're doing now.

$91K will bring you a pretty nice real house in these parts. Well, never mind that. So if I understand the plan correctly I put one up and charge homeless people rent they can’t pay because that’s the reason they’re homeless in the first place?

Where do they defecate? Does the tiny house have a sewer hook up or what?

How do they get running water? Or is this just a place to sleep at night and they are on the street the rest of the time?

How do they access tiny homes in backyards without gated fences? Do they have to walk through people’s homes?

Why am I even bothering to ask details about an insane idea?

Don’t be so sure. This is the city giving “free” upgrades to politically connected landowners. In exchange for 5 years on housing a model homeless family you get 70k and get exempted from zoning and can build another dwelling on your house. These will be fully self contained with utility hookups. After 5 years it’s yours and you collect rent. They aren’t going to put in the drug addicts. They will be hand selected model “homeless.” If the city were going to give me 70k property upgrades and a guaranteed renter with zoning exemption I would be on it in seconds.

How about just let people purchase or build accessory dwelling units on their own property and use them for whatever they want, including renting them out if they want.

There are lots of uses for auxillary structures: home office, hobby place, teenager hangout, elderly relative residence, caregiver residence, college student housing, extra bedroom for guests, handicapped person residence if the main residence is not handicap accessible ... many more.

If they just got rid of the regulations or made it easier for people to add on to their own property, many people would add these structures ... and a few of them might let homeless people stay there.

This is not the place of government to interfere. Many people already take in homeless or jobless people in their own family on a temporary basis in a spare bedroom or whatever. So there are already many ‘homeless’ people living with friends and relatives.

Likewise many elderly people move into their children’s homes rather than live in a nursing home. Having a separate place to live on the same property would give them some independence and dignity over staying in a nursing home and still not be too much of intrusion on the main house’s inhabitants. More people would take care of their elderly parents or relatives if they had a better set-up to do it. But this is not allowed in most places.

Government needs to get out to the way. People can take care of most of the needs of their own friends and family without the government putting up roadblocks.

My guess is that less than 20 property owners city wide will offer to house a vagrant on their home turf, and those that do will eventually regret it.

Yes - at the bottom is a single reference to Multnomah county. Portland, Oregon. And yeah, I was wondering too.

> So weird to live behind enemy lines, but the article is very true about the exorbitant cost of housing. Monthly rents are higher than people’s monthly income. Something is really wrong.

It's called "greed".

That’s right. You can build a basic 200-300 square foot tiny home for about $100 per square foot, even less if you do most of the work yourself and use some salvaged materials. This is all-in including site work.

Instead of having a beautiful, quiet backyard to grill out on your deck, have a glass of wine and listen to the birds while tending to your flowers and vegetable garden, you will have fights, drugs, trash, diapers thrown out, beer cans, needles, cigarette butts, screaming arguments and people expecting you to share YOUR wine and food.

Also, look for them to expect sharing holidays with your family - July 4th, Christmas, Easter and the Easter egg hunts and deep frying your turkey on Thanksgiving.

After all, they are YOUR GUESTS!!

Hmmm. I thought someplace was offering tiny homes to veterans. Maybe they got over-ruled.

Who’s going to pay the rent? Is the mini home ever truly the property of the private person? Are they allowed to evict the renter for good reason?

Gosh, all the benefits of home ownership without the petty inconveniences of having a job or paying property taxes. Plus they would now have an address to receive their welfare and food stamps. And they say California is nuts!

I am waiting to see how many Oregon leftists choose to have homeless people in their backyard.

Good, many in Portland will soon discover the real reason why they are homeless.
