The myth of the tortured genius has endured for centuries.
Artists as diverse as Van Gogh, Kurt Cobain and Sylvia Plath have become famous for their talent as well as for their struggles with mental health problems.
But a conclusive link has never been made between mental health issues and creativity.
For the first time reliable data has shown that the suicide rate among people working in creative roles is significantly higher than the national average.
The first-ever study of suicide by profession from the ONS, which covered England in the years from 2011 to 2015, showed that people who work in arts-related jobs are up to four times more likely to commit suicide.
Among men working in culture, media and sport-related jobs, the risk is 20 per cent higher, and among women it is 69 per cent higher.
The risk is even more pronounced among individual professions. Male artists are more than twice as likely to commit suicide, and with female artists the risk quadruples.
Rates are similarly high among actors, entertainers and presenters.
There were 311 suicides among people working in culture, media and sport professions during the period.
While the numbers are low, Louis Appleby, Professor of Psychiatry at Manchester University, said that they were statistically significant.

Kurt Corbain and Sylvia Plath were geniuses? Who knew?
Bukowski...
“Dark” poet.
Barfly ,the Movie,is Uplifting .
Did you ask him why? I am curious why people reject Jesus.
[
Don’t let little minded people’s take on God throw you off.

And there are a lot of remnants of this in small minded people’s religion. Invariably selling God’s love and its capabilities far short.
Most of my life has been spent, consciously or not, in protest of such folly. Yes there is a God! No He is not your personal Hitman in “heaven”! As far from that as east is from west!
God always allows people to seal themselves off spiritually. Love would not be a free choice otherwise.
God respects our eternal souls to the point of committing to hate Him forever if we must. Hell is both permanent and voluntary.
Why people reject Jesus?
Satan Stated “I Will...I Will Not”
as opposed to deferring to God’s Will.
The devil you say.
Yes he is the evil genius at the root of the evil in the world.
This is why the Lord will say depart into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. It wasn’t supposed to be for people, who chose that against the nature that God desired for them.
Hell’s problem is that it is trying to chill out God’s superior fire. It never succeeds except in making itself miserable.
I made money.
For lots of folks.
A good thing.
Paid for my hobbies.
If these tortured geniuses had the mental ability to correctly answer the most important question of all, they would be much less likely to commit suicide.
After all, mental ability is a predictor of success.
To consider is to think.
It’s simple. They’re not really that bright.
This is easily explained in more detail.
To consider is to think.
Get the point?

I gave all my torchered genius away for free....of course free was all it was really worth. Doh!!
The smartest and happiest people I’ve
meet are God fearing folks.
To draw out pure evil in others is as easy as saying that name;
Jesus.
>> It appears it is often suicide. I found a different path
Despair is nondiscriminatory. But it’s good you’re navigating a worthwhile path — not an easy challenge for anyone.
I know that. What I don’t know is why people reject Him.
I love horseradish. It does help.
No, but I think you could make the case he Islamic pretty easily. I'm not sure the "genius" qualifier applies in that case.
