Democratic lawmakers introduced a proposal to place a fee on opioid prescriptions with the revenue going to combat rampant painkiller and heroin addiction across the U.S.
Sen. Chris Murphy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut, a state hit hard by increases in drug overdoses, are calling for a one-cent per-milligram tax to be added to prescriptions for opiate-based painkillers.

Universal prescription tracking. If they can run Visa card they can track opioids. Know who gets what and how many. The pain gets treated with limitations and duplicate prescriptions via Dr. shopping is eliminated.
Better idea...TAX SENATORS everytime they propose a tax...
That should bring coats down (stated goal)
Tax doctors who perscribe these poisons? Ok. I am a board certified anesthesiologist. I have two other board certifications one of which is critical care meeicicine. I have a doctorate and masters degree. I also have five years postdoctoral training in the alleviation of pain. I have seen tragic acute and chronic pain. I have treated people disintegrating from cancer who have pain that only the demons of bell could create. So tell me based on your qualifications why you can judge these medications to be poisons and based on your professional credentials why you Have the expertise to make such a dangerous and ignorant statement.
I used to get hydrocodone from my GP for my pain. With all the rule changes I can no longer get them to prescribe them without going to a pain management DR.
I didn’t take them all the time just when I really needed them. I’ve had to go with other choices.
When I hear, “We’re from the government and we’re here to help.” I know I’m screwed.
We already have this in the state of Florida. It’s called eforce and tracks all filled rx and allows me to see if my patients doctor shop. Due diligence is easy around this
This is so stupid that only a democrat could even conceive of a tax on pain killers.
Is there anything for which the democrats DON’T think more taxes are the solution?
They already do that.
Well... The companys will pay it so whats the problem... Why dont we make it 50 bucks a milligram? Big pharma can afford it. We all know they just keep piles of cash to pay stuff like this. They wont raise their prices or anything like that.
What idiots in Congress!
AS usual, the real agenda of the DNC thuggery is hidden in the consequences: if the drugs addicts lust for are out of their price range they will resort to crime to obtain the funds to obtain the drugs, thus pushing the victim populace to beg for more state protections and controls, thus impelling the fascist state into reality. THAT is the deeper goal of democrap pleadings. Sadly, the American people have been dumbed down to such depths that they are unable to reason that deeply into the agenda of the globalist servants in government.
Makes sense. There are too many junkies so we will tax those who are not. I am sure the junkies will feel sorry for the actual people in need and clean themselves up.
So, of course, continue to prescribe pain killers when they're necessary. And pay a tax. It will stop those who are in less critical situations than you're in from getting people addicted.
“I am a board certified anesthesiologist.”
We’re looking for ideas to reduce the abuse of pain medications, not to disadvantage those that need them..
As someone in the medical industry, give us some ideas for reducing the abuse.
I don’t expect you to have any ideas that would reduce the amount of money we pay into the healthcare industry.
Tell us some ways we can reduce healthcare costs other than the usual crap about eliminating unhealthy habits.
Here’s a good chance for you to inform us and be honest with us.
Taxes are already budgeted to “combat” controlled substances in general. No need to budget a “per-drug” tax.
In fact, if they do want to pursue that route, they can siphon off the marijuana money they would otherwise spend in states that have legalized it.
I believe that states are given some drug enforcement money to the states, but that is not broken down by drug. All they would need to do is estimate how much of that budget would have been used for pot.
Many of the worst offenders are VA doctors! I personally know 3 different veterans who had to pay for rehab out of their own pockets to help them get off of the opioids to which they became addicted while patients at the VA!
Another friend of mine visited the VA hospital 3 times in a single week, due to gall-bladder problems, and each of the first 2 times, they offered to give her prescriptions for Vicodin for the pain, 60 tablets EACH! The third time, she had surgery to remove her gall bladder, and they gave her another prescription as well. Had she filled them, she would have been able to get 180 vicodin tabs!
She refused the second and third RXs.

Hear, hear! My mate for life is dealing with Stage 4 bone cancer. I don’t think these idiots should have a vote.
I want propose a 1 million dollar tax on any legislator introducing a bill that includes an increase, or new tax or fee. Paid for from the legislator personal funds.
And they should start taxing cocaine and crack too........
This show how truly brainless the dims are. Raise the cost of prescription opiates, higher prices for street opiates pills, force people to go to cheaper heroin.
Brilliant.
