After years of allowing customers to rank movies on a scale of 1-to-5 stars, the streaming service announced plans to replace that system with a binary thumbs up vs. thumbs down rating. Soon one-star ratings will cease to be a thing on Netflix or five-star ratings, for that matter.
The new Siskel & Ebert-ian system was revealed by Netflix executive Tod Yellin at a press briefing at the companys headquarters in Los Gatos, California on Thursday, Variety reported and EW confirmed.

Crap! Well I can’t boycott them....I gotta finish binge-watching Z-Nation and The Walking Dead!
Typical liberalness. If you can’t get the results you want, you change the rules to suit your needs.
Yellen has proved again and again to be an idiot.
I see a big unexpected backfire coming for these libtards.
Smucky Schumer (RAT-NY) must have ordered it.
Won’t this screw up the algorithm they use to suggest things to watch based on my feedback?
I’ve noticed that a lot of liberal trash on Netflix has low star ratings ... My guess is that more cord cutters lean more towards the right ... My favorite leftist spew was the one film that shows a hypothetical outcome of the south winning the Civil War. Leftists have such a static view of the world.
Yellen is a woman who heads up the Fed.
Yellin is a guy named Tod that is an executive at Netflix.
;-)
Wait, so Netflix is reducing the usefulness of it’s user interface in order to protect Amy Schumer from viewers who didn’t like her show? Hobbling the rating system just makes me less likely to use Netflix.
The online comment service Disqus did a similar thing about 3 or 4 years ago. They eliminated the thumbs down arrow. It’s still there and you can push it, but nobody sees the count anymore. I knew it was a liberal action because the liberal comments would get scores and scores, sometimes hundreds of thumbs down votes. I am serious. They would get massacred. They figured they had to do something.
Only on Netflix are we subjected to a bar-list of gay-lesbian content when we never would watch such content - and in fact would delete that bar from our screens were it possible to do so. Yes indeed, Netflix does protect its own. It sure as hell doesn't do anything constructive to aid our viewing choices.
That doesn’t make Captain Jack’s statement any less true. Yellen is an idiot. Yellin appears to be, as well.
(And this right after I said something nice to you on that other thread, BTLD.)
Saw that.
Thanks.
I laugh at their “suggestions” for me — whatever algorithms they use are very odd and unreliable. ok, maybe my tastes are inconsistent, I don’t know, but I never seem to get any good suggestions from Netflix.
Weird. I never understand why these CEO’s insist on shooting their companies in the foot. It’s like they forget they are in the business of selling a product or that nobody can take their cheese.
Seriously, the 5 star system is data that they can use to better pick and choose programming and possibly price negotiation with content producers.
Thumbs up or down is much less useful in the data realm.
Lol
Making a safe-space at Netflix.
Amy Schumer has been ranting against “trolls” because her Netflix special is so unpopular. Apparently if you think she is stupid and unfunny you must be a troll.
