"Bless you" is a phrase so reflexively spoken upon hearing a sneeze that many of us forgot or don't even know where it came from. It has obvious religious connotations but they're archaic and no longer make any sense in our modern-day world. You don't protect your friend from the devil when she coughs so please, let her sneeze in peace. Here are five reasons why "bless you" has to go.

Atheists, for example, might respond to a "bless you" with a roll of the eyes. Trivia question: what do you say in Japanese when someone sneezes?
Answer: you don’t say anything, because sneezing in public in Japan is the manners equivalent of passing gas in public in the US. It’s one of the reasons why Japanese people who think they are going to be sneezing (e.g., having a cold) wear a surgeon’s mask in public, without turning heads as one might in the US.
It’s still tremendously popular in the north too. :)

Hey Ariel. Did mommy and daddy name you after that mermaid cartoon? Lighten up. If “God Bless You” offends you, then you really need to go see a shrink. Sneezing and having somebody say “God Bless You” isn’t quite as bad as being shot by one of your Muzzie buddies and he says, “Allah Akbar”. Get over yourself, ditz.
