In a clash with President Trump's environmental team, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has declared that climate change is a threat to national security and one military planners must consider in drawing up strategies.
According to a report from ProPublica, Mattis told Democratic senators that climate change is real and "can be a driver of instability."
His position, at odds with President Trump and his Environmental Protection Agency chief, came in answers to questions from senators following his confirmation hearing. They were released to ProPublica which reached out to the White House and Pentagon for comment without success.

The issue of global warming and climate change flashed in the past week when EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt questioned the impact of man on the environment.
When asked about the impact of carbon dioxide, he said, "I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do and there's tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so no, I would not agree that it's a primary contributor to the global warming that we see." He added, "We need to continue the debate and continue the review and the analysis."

This guy is obviously on the left. He needs to be replaced.
Geesh!
Everyone Breathe. I have two cousins that have served in Marines and Defense. Have been around Mattis for year. The guy knows what he is doing. We may not agree with his Climate Change beliefs, but he knows a helluva lot more than all of us on what is important to running the Defense of this Country. I want a guy that the military men and women believe in and is no BS get things done guy. Most people I know like that are going to have oppossing views on certain things because they are not going to compromise their beliefs. Bottom line I trust this guy with American’s National Defense, and that is his number one job. Does that mean I will agree with everything he thinks or does no.
Should we all disavow Trump because he seems to be behind Ryan’s idiotic Health Care plan?
You can all flame away at me now :).
EXACTLY!
Anyone know the perfect Temperature for the Earth anyway?
‘Too hot or cold for Dinosaurs’ is a good starting temperature range, I’ll take either outside boundary.
President Trump, please fire this ignorant SOB !
So then Mattis wasn't referring to AGW.
“Climate change is impacting stability in areas of the world where our troops are operating today.”
Benefit of the doubt translation:
“The bs anthropogenic climate change political scam is impacting stability, because the people in areas where our troops are operating today use it as part of their justification for unrest”
The artcle state: Mattis told Democratic senators that climate change is real and "can be a driver of instability."
When I was still active duty, in a War College lecture, we had a briefing on future drivers of instability. Like the need for oil drove Japan to expand its empire leading to war in the Pacific, other natural resources, or lack thereof, can lead to instability and war.
In the lecture, the major concern floated was presented by two graphs, one which depicted present and future global population centers and growth, and the other presenting the present and future expected global availability/supply of fresh water sources. It is clear from this type of data that there will be conflict in certain regions (China/India for example) over territory for water as a resource.
So "climate change" (not man made CO2 exhaust or cow fart climate change) exemplified in the form of drought leading to more arid regions and less of a life essential, can indeed be a driver of instability.
I don't see a problem with the statement from the article, but the slant is certainly trying to make the new admin look divided, which is nothing new.
Agreed, see my post 68
Spot on. I said something similar, but not as concise as you, in post 68.
I never get real goofy about what some of these folks say at confirmation hearings. They seems to say whatever they need to say to get approved. I could say that my penis is 14 inches long. My wife is not walking around with a smile and bow-legged.
When the rubber meets the road, what they actually do is what’s important.
I suspect that if President Trump needs to fire anyone he will.
I’m not sure that this Mattis info isn’t even real.
But, if it is, it sounds more like virtue signaling to satisfy certain ears.
Or, worse, perhaps he believes it or, still worse, he believes it and will act upon the perceived threat.
C’mon people - there is NO question that climate changes. If it didn’t I’d be living under an ocean.
Mankinds activities have virtually nothing to do with it.
Plan for scenariaos that include climate-change, you bet. Especially ones like “the big one” that may give CA it’s wish of becoming a separate country.
Mattis believes in anthropogenic global warming.
He got bent out of shape because President Trump involved himself in selection of senior military personnel.
He tried to select as his senior aide a man who declined, and then one of the chief supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, Anne Patterson.
He wants Israel to capitulate to extreme Arab threats.
He believes in anthropogenic clobal warming, and believes that it is so severe as to negatively impact our military efforts.
What is it with this guy?
” Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has declared that climate change is a threat to national security and one military planners must consider in drawing up strategies.”
I’m getting the impression this guy is out of his element when he expresses his opinions on non-military matters.
This is supposedly a “Mad Dog”? Sounds like a liberal lap dog.
So we have a general who worries about his carbon footprint while waging war? Maybe he should put on a pussy hat while he’s at it.
