Yep it has a more accurate meaning (ie people from Asia). In the US it’s used to mean “Mongoloid”.

Asia is of course huge and diverse. If you really want to be "more accurate" then describe them as Pakistani, for example.

It’s not meant to be misleading, because this is a British paper. Therefore, the readers know that “Asian” means Middle Easterner, Pakistani, etc.

And this has certainly been explained often enough on FR.

In any case, the real problem is not being “Asians” - East Indians are “Asians,” also - but being Muslims.

That's just the British custom. It's technically correct, since Pakistan is in Asia. Heck, when I was a kid, we called Chinese, Japanese, etc. "orientals". The whole "asian" term entered in only when political correctness made its putrid debut.

1960s and 70s

Mongolioid raced folks like Japs and Korean and Chinese and Viets and all this hybrids like Thai and Indonesian and Filipino and Malay and so forth

Anyone with relatively the common eye structure from Mongolia to the Mekong were ORIENTALS

Pakistanis and Indians and Afghan and so forth east of the Persian Gulf were Asian

Although not always completely accurate it worked

It was far more accurate than this blanket term Asian for anyone east of the Urals and west of Honolulu

But no someone Ivy League pinhead in the 80s or so decided since Oriental was also used to describe eastern cultural stuff like food and furniture and music etc that it was racist to use a cultural label as a racial label

Of course out of the other side of their mouth they claim race isn’t correct anyhow

But now everyone not white or black is Asian or maybe indigenous peoples

It’s all political and illogical

So I still say oriental

I have a Mongolian wife and a Chinese adoptee in my extended family

They do not care if their race or ethnic peoples are termed Oriental

That would be more specific. I was just noting that headline is not misleading to much of the world. Most Americans use “Asian” as a synonym for a race. That doesn't work for other cultures who might be more aware that the area called Asia is about half Caucasian.

“Racial abuse” applies if a minority uses a slur against a white. “Hate crime” applies if a white uses a slur against a minority.

The difference is that you can be thrown in jail for a hate crime, but never for racial abuse.
