Trump budget expected to seek historic contraction of federal workforce
WaPo ^ | Damian Paletta

Posted on 03/13/2017 6:53:22 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

President Trump’s budget proposal this week would shake the federal government to its core if enacted, culling back numerous programs and expediting a historic contraction of the federal workforce.

This would be the first time the government has executed cuts of this magnitude — and all at once — since the drawdown following World War II, economists and budget analysts said.

The spending budget Trump is set to release Thursday will offer the clearest snapshot of his vision for the size and role of government. Aides say that the president sees a new Washington emerging from the budget process, one that prioritizes the military and homeland security while slashing many other areas, including housing, foreign assistance, environmental programs, public broadcasting and research. Simply put, government would be smaller and less involved in regulating life in America, with private companies and states playing a much bigger role.

The cuts Trump plans to propose this week are also expected to lead to layoffs among federal workers, changes that would be felt sharply in the Washington area. According to an economic analysis by Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, the reductions outlined so far by Trump’s advisers would reduce employment in the region by 1.8 percent and personal income by 3.5 percent, and lower home prices by 1.9 percent.

“These are not the kind of cuts that you can accommodate by tightening the belt one notch, by shaving a little bit off of a program, or by downsizing a few staff here or there,” said Robert Reischauer, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office. “These are cuts that would require a wholesale triage of a vast array of federal activities.”

I look forward to the day Washington, DC and Detroit metro areas are equally prosperous.

The final straw for me was when congress exempted itself from Obamacare. All of those regulations on hiring, work-place rules, etc. don’t apply to congress either.

I’ll take it but it’s not near enough!

I hope Trump can bull it through Congress! It’s going to be a fight with the Liberals in Both parties!

"President Trump’s budget proposal this week would shake the federal government to its core if enacted, culling back numerous programs and expediting a historic contraction of the federal workforce", the Democrats and Media (but I repeat myself) shrieked.

You see once again how the WaPo doesn't even make an attempt to place a distinction between partisan Democrat talking points, and their own editorial bias. They are one and the same. There's no need to pretend otherwise...

Transfer their ammo budget to our ICE people, and their ammo and weapons to ICE!

Actually, due to baseline budgeting, the actual “reduction” would likely come in at 6%.

Trump uses the government to tear itself apart, then cuts it in half.

You are living in the past.

There is our team...and there is the enemy.

WaPo and the MSM is the enemy.

We don't need to be reminded that they are the enemy.

You are living in the past.

I don't get that comment. What did I say that made you say that?

There is our team...and there is the enemy.

Agreed.

WaPo and the MSM is the enemy.

We don't need to be reminded that they are the enemy.

Are we disagreeing over whether we need to be reminded or not?

In any event, these outlets used to pretend that they were something other than the Ministry of Propaganda; now, they're seemingly proud of it...

I’m so glad I retired when I did. Out before the exodus.

For two or three years immediately prior to 9/11 we had a RIF hanging over our heads. That was no fun.

Sorry for being unclear. My comment was as much to myself as you. What triggered it was this comment by you...

No matter how much I remind myself that WaPo, the NYTimes, CNN are the enemy, I am still surprised by my astonishment that they can be so blatant about their agenda.

I think the left-wing media is so blinded by its complete brainwashing that it doesn't realize how blatant the bias is.

I am surprised that I keep shaking my head about their bias.

I know they are the enemy, yet I guess I continue to harbor some small glimmer of hope that they might awaken.

DC Metro is gorgeous as you would expect it to be since they have all our money... I’d like it to be brought down to the level of your average US City so I could afford it.. start by moving agencies to outlying cities in low cost states. DOE should be in Oklahoma.. BIA in Wyoming.. 90% of the EPA should be turned back to the states and it’s hq moved to upstate NY near Love Canal... CIA should be disbanded along with Homeland Security and the remaining security agencies merged and “rightsized” into a nice new HQ in an abandoned shopping mall complex in Ohio..

I don’t know where the idea that federal unions are strong comes from. There is little or no impact they have on the budget. Cannot negotiate over wages, do not have to join them. They are as toothless as a 110 yr old man.

The chief benefit from cutting the federal workforce is to limit the meddling and over-regulation not saving money.

You cant fire them because of the union.

The best fix is to make direct hiring of federal contractors legal again.

"1.8% cut is draconian? Only in Washington D.C."

It was a projected reduction in regional (DC) employment of 1.8%. Not everybody in DC works for the government, so that's not even a measure of regional cuts.

The word "draconian" was not used in the article.

1) The impediment to firing is not the unions but civil service regulations.

2) the feds hire contractors all the time.

Agencies have branches all over the country. The EPA, for example, has ten regions each employing thousands of people.

the feds hire contractors all the time.

The Feds can't hire individual contractors directly. There has to be an "approved" prime contractor who marks up the hourly rate over 100%. Pure profit.

I’ve got family in Contracting businesses.

Fed and state govs set the minimum wage you MUST pay employees when doing jobs for the gov

You must be aware of that when doing bids or you can lose a lot of money.

Last I knew (years ago) it was in the 40 some $ range, must be much more now.
