California to fight if EPA eases emissions rule
The San Fransicko Chronicle ^ | March 11, 2017 | Carolyn Lochhead

The Trump administration is expected to start rolling back tough limits on carbon pollution from cars and trucks this week, and may be considering a plan to revoke California’s authority to set its own pollution standards for vehicles, a linchpin of the state’s effort to battle climate change.

Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt is pushing the move to weaken emissions standards, siding with auto manufacturers that argue vehicle fuel efficiency standards put in place by the Obama administration will cost billions of dollars. On Thursday, he said he would move “very, very soon” to roll them back.

If that happens, California will probably exercise its special authority, known as a waiver, to keep the current vehicle emissions standards in place, laying the groundwork for an extraordinary tug-of-war between the state and the federal EPA.

Californicate's We're-so-special motor vehicle pollution control requirements have doubled the cost of all pollution control systems on all motor vehicles delivered in the US, not just Fagofornia vehicles.

Additionally, the CA systems cause a notable reduction in engine efficiency, and quickly degrade in operation resulting in a slight net increase of tailpipe pollution emissions over 49 state vehicles.

California is in a position to lose big despite the assurances that the CAL EPA can bend the entire Federal Government, and 49 other state governments, around their little finger.

Pruitt has got to follow through on this. The last minute standards Obongo imposed were outrageous we will be forced to drive $40,000 golf carts.

I hope the Trump administration drops CAFE standards. It would be nice to see a resurgence of full size American cars on the road.

If kalifornia wants to impose a bazillion miles per gallon standard, and if car manufacturers are stupid enough to go along with them, I say go for it.

Let them do what they want. The auto industry can sell vehicles that cost $40,000 more than they cost in any other state, or just don’t sell them in CA. Let them walk

BTW if the inland portions of CA would like to break away I think the rest of the country would welcome them

“California’s ability to write its own tighter tailpipe standards was explicitly written into the federal Clean Air Act five decades ago to help the state combat smog in the Los Angeles Basin.”

Depending on the specific language in the law, this may come down to legislative intent- and Calif would lose.

Good thing you are made of money, 'cause you'll be drivin' a fifty grand electric moped.

California's plan is to force manufacturers to build ONLY vehicles that meet CA specs, regardless of where they are sold.

Or, auto makers can begin to build 49-state cars and California can end up looking like Cuba in 10 or so years.

“I hope the Trump administration drops CAFE standards”

Sadly this won’t happen. My wife worked in planning for 1 of the big 3. You would be astonished at the amount of cost and resources it took to satisfy CAFE requirements. It completely distorts the market and sends vehicles costs through the roof. Before the government sunk their claws into the process cars were designed for style, comfort and performance these things are secondary to government compliance. The fact that that these new standards threaten millions of jobs means nothing to the CA a-holes.
They will fight this the the SC. I just pray Pruitt doesn’t back down.

“California’s plan is to force manufacturers to build ONLY vehicles that meet CA specs, regardless of where they are sold. “

Like “our” current “approved” handgun list, I hope that auto mfr’s, like many of the HG makers, refuse to make CA specific vehicles. The only way to stop the CA government is to make it impossible for the state’s citizens to get transportation. Unlike, guns, cars and trucks being unavailable for sale here would definitely change the dynamic in Sacramento.

California needs to secede. Seriously.

Nah, the Feds should just lease to China, for 99 years, the nine bay area counties and LA, for all the US Treasury bonds they hold.

Then sell 'em water and power for what the market will bear.

The whine would be heard around the world.
