Cummings: There 'very well may be' connection between Bharara firing and investigations into Trump

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said there could be a connection between the firing of former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and investigations into President Trump.

During an interview on ABC's "This Week," Cummings, the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, said the president has the right to fire U.S. attorneys.

But he noted that not very long ago, the president said he was willing to "keep the U.S. attorney there in New York."

"And then suddenly, he's, I guess, changed his mind," Cummings said.

"I'm just curious as to why that is and certainly there's a lot of questions coming up as to whether ... President Trump is concerned about the jurisdiction of this U.S. attorney and whether that might affect his future," he continued.

"You look at everything surrounding the investigations -- there are a lot of questions that need to be asked, but again, the president does have that prerogative."

Last week, watchdog groups asked Bharara to investigate Trump regarding foreign business deals, according to The Washington Post. The groups requested the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York look into whether the president had gotten benefits from foreign governments, in violation of the Emoluments Clause.

"I think that, again, what has been happening is that there is an air of distrust that has been brought on by President Trump himself," Cummings said Sunday.

"So I think that in part, the president has created this situation for himself. But yea, sure, no doubt about it, when they asked about the Emoluments Clause and possible violations of it and the U.S. attorneys relationship to that, I think that had perhaps something to do with."

When pressed further on whether he thinks there might be a connection, Cummings said: "There very well may be."

No mention of the other 45 resignations asked for. Cummings is known for his blatant lies and fading away when his conspiracy theories are revealed as fake. His statement "there well could be something to this" means, I don't have a clue and no evidence but it is enough to get the press printing conspiracy theories.

The morons who send this clown to Congress could care less that he is a member of the Communist Party along with that ghastly hag from California, Maxine Waters.

Hey Cummings. The US Attorney isn’t the one that runs the investigations. Those are done by the Deputy US Attorneys. The US Attorney is the manager. Whatever investigations that were going on under this US Attorney will still continue under the new one.

“Donald Trump did what only Donald Trump can do so well: He said, ‘You’re fired!’”

On “Justice,” Judge Jeanine Pirro slammed Preet Bharara for not leaving his position as U.S. Attorney “with dignity.”

It’s a shame the libel/slander laws don’t apply to congressmen.

Since I heard him tell that Admiral that if we stationed too many troops on Guam the island could tip over it's been hard for me to take anything this rocket scientist says seriously.

I wonder if Cummings would call for an investigation if Trump farted in the wrong direction...

There “may very well” be a lot of connections.

Bharara “may very well” be a rapist of wife-beater.

But when you hear hoofbeats, stop expecting zebras! Trump fired potentially disloyal AGs, just like Clinton did.

As I recall, Cummings was one of the ones that called for IRS targeting of conservatives yet he was allowed to remain on the investigative committee.

It’s possible they could be on a perpetual investigation of Trump.

Actually, Bharara was investigating only Dems, and also Trump called him the day before (obviously to either exempt him from the firings or offer him a position in DC) but Bharara refused to take the call because he said it might taint his investigations. I think that’s honorable and I think Trump would have understood it, but I don’t think Bharara should have given the very people he’s investigating a shot in the arm by making it look as if he was “standing up to Trump” or some such nonsense.

This could have been handled better by Bharara. As for Trump, he should have fired them all on day one, ala Clinton.

Trump is fortunate in his enemies. Elijah Cummings is not the bastion of integrity that the average person looks to for truth. A few moonbats, who already hate Trump, will see some confirmation-bias-driven affirmation here. Many non-moonbats will yawn, and a far from insignificant number will become even more jaded and/or irked by the MSM’s anti-Trump obsession/vendetta.
