It saddens, me, but you are exactly right.

It was my FAVORITE place to go to re-charge and relax in the 80’s and 90’s. 2000 was my LAST trip.

The areas near the border are usually pretty bad, but the tourist areas of Cancun, Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta are actually much safer than say ... Chicago, Washington DC and Miami. I take a little umbrage with the article referring to the "resorts" of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. They are no more resorts than Orlando or Anaheim are resorts. The more correct language would be the resort towns ...

The resorts of Mexico are wonderful. I have been to the Cancun area 3x in the last 2 years, including 8 days last month. I am even considering retirement there ... large ex-pat communities, housing is much less than anywhere stateside, and cost of living is around 1/3 what it is here. The expat communities, as well as the resorts, are all gated and have security. In fact, one that I looked at last month boasted a lower crime rate than INSIDE Disneyworld.

A decade or so ago, I went to Egypt. Before I went people would say "Oh, aren't you afraid" and "Be careful" to which I would reply ... of what? The fact of the matter is, if you are they type that goes looking for criminal activity, you will find it no matter where you go in this world, including the block down the street. If you are the type that avoids the places where the criminals go or hang out, for the most part you will never have to worry about it.

I vacationed in Cabo last June and loved it. We stayed at an all inclusive resort that was beautiful, and the staff was exceptional. We did venture off to go sailing one day and that was enjoyable as well. We did notice that the area was having a building boom. We were told it was drug cartels fueling the building. That makes you stand up and take notice.

That lower California peninsula, Baja California has not suffered as much in all this mayhem as the main country itself. I’d almost say they’ve been unscathed so perhaps it changes now.

It is overwhelmingly lowlifes, gang bangers and druggies killing each other - like in US inner cities. The biggest danger to US tourists is to young Spanish speaking Americans who get involved with these gangsters socially.

Mexico overall is still nice and safe for tourists. The dollar goes further than it did just a couple of months ago - almost 20 to 1 for the Mexican Peso. Some beautiful resorts.

The best dive I ever had was off Cabo - in the middle of a huge school of sardines, which surrounded me like a solid wall of silver.

Mexico, at least on paper, was richer than the U.S. in the 1830s and 1840s. Our silver dollar was based on the ‘Piece of Eight’ minted in Mexico City. But they have always suffered from incredibly corrupt leadership right from the beginning of their independence and they just can seem to overcome it. The Mexican people deserve better. It would be better for us and them if they get it.

Yep..stay away from the food and water in Mexico..which is why we only ate on the ship..I think I gained 10 pounds eating LOL but I did so much walking from one side of the ship to the other I lost it pretty quick

My answer is that Mexico has really never been a country, but rather a Spanish Colony run by a small, but powerful bunch of White Spaniards as their own private preserve with a bunch of Mestizos to do the hard labor. Have you ever compared those in the Mexican Government hierarchy to the average Mexican citizen? That little pr!ck that's the current president could pass for being Irish! And take a look at Whore Hey Ramos if you need another example. Although I'm not advocating it, the only way Mexico ever can come close to it's potential would come if we invaded and kicked out the "white guys" running the place.

Drove from Orange Cty Ca to Cabo San Lucas in 91. Stayed for 4 or 5 days to see the longest total eclipse in many many years.

I took a Lear Jet to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun.

Just hanging out in the touristy areas is a fake solution. The only thing that can't be duplicated elsewhere safer is the weather.

Since Mrs. BN & I will be spending one night in Chetumal, MX and three in Playa del Carmen soon, I guess our lobotomist got carried away during our last operations.

Of course, we once lived in Chicago, "The Murder Capital of the US", so I guess our insanity got started 46 years ago.

Actually, it started when I was a 6 year old kid living off DuPont Circle in Washington, DC, I was chased home by another kid brandishing a meat cleaver. Mom relieved him of the meat cleaver.
