(CNN) - A 14-year-old Danish boy doing research for a history class found the wreckage of a German World War II plane with the remains of the pilot in the cockpit.

Daniel Kristiansen and his father, Klaus, discovered what's believed to be a Messerschmitt fighter plane buried in a field on their farm near Birkelse in northern Denmark.

"We went out to the field with a metal detector," Klaus Kristiansen told CNN. "I hoped we might find some old plates or something for Daniel to show in school."

Instead, they found bits of plane debris. So they borrowed an excavator from a neighbor and dug down seven or eight meters.

Looks like the mixup may be common...

Red Baron killed about 20 years before WW-II even started.

7 or 8 mwtere down, The ME-109 must have went in nose first
close to vertical.

The question is who shot it down?

I wonder if the German troops instead of removing the crashed plane, as the grandfather thought they did... simply buried it. Would’ve probably been easier than carting the thing out of the middle of a field.

The article mentioned that a nearby airfield was a Luftwaffe training base.

This may have been the Luftwaffe's version of John McCain ...

So the photos is of a DB605 engine combined with a tail wheel strut it’s clearly an Me-109 probably a late G6 model...Which would fit with the 1944 time frame

That’s what I’m thinking. Odd though that they wouldn’t recover the pilot.

“Oh - its Heinie! Third one he’s crashed!! Good riddance!”

Like Americans, German soldiers NEVER would have buried one of their own inside a downed aircraft.

well he was just flying around looking for some chicks. all dressed up and no place to go.....:

Sarauw believes the pilot came from the training base for German pilots in Aalborg, a nearby city. Along with the pilot’s suit, hat and three unused condoms, they also have his wallet, which contained two Danish coins and some food stamps for the canteen at the Aalborg base.

The southern part of mainland Denmark was German territory from 1864 until after WWI, but the story says the find was made in northern Denmark.

"24 ft in 70 years?"

How fast was it going when it hit, 300, 400, 500 mph? What are the chances it went in at a high angle? The Luftwaffe recovered what was sticking out of the ground.

The bits look like engine, and supposing that it was an ME-109, probably a Gustav, given the date of the crash, it's probably all that was left of the aircraft, except for the pilot bits that were caught between the airframe and the engine.

I'd wager that the total airplane found would fit in a pickup truck bed.
