Marines from an amphibious task force have left their ships in the Middle East and deployed to Syria, establishing an outpost from which they can fire artillery guns in support of the fight to take back the city of Raqqa from the Islamic State, defense officials said.

Although the Marines could start popping rounds right away, I believe planners will include some time for them to fortify their position a bit first.

My nephew took a Med cruise or two on the Tarawa off the coast of lebanon in the 80s.. We did one in 2013 on a Princess ship. ) much more comfortable.
I hope they use some big guns on Raqqa.. payback for leveling Palmyra..

Would look like a flock of B-52s carpet bombing the city with HE and cluster munitions 24/7 until only rubble remains - unfortunately, there would be few, if any, ‘civilians’ left alive whereupon the Press, the UN, and the Progressive Communists of the Democrat Party would howl for heads to roll.

I’ve never been at a live fire for a big gun,, 88, 105, or 155,, my ears are ringing at the thought.
Seeing as Assad was the one protecting the Christian minority, I would say “Keep Assad there, and kill all the ISIS members”.
I hear ya on the carpet bombing.. Use drones and corral the remnants of ISIS in pockets and send in the AC130s,, maybe a MOAB or two,, I would hope that all those who could have escaped have.. sometimes the only way to get rid of the rats is burn the place down.. and bop em over the head with bats and shovels as they scurry for cover elsewhere. This nest should have been hit and hit hard long ago..
When I was in, they would have live fire demonstrations for the big wigs and VIPs, and I would go just to watch.....................
1st MAW here, sounds like fun.
Ya need a pretty long range for some of the big guns.. They can reach out and touch things 20 miles away these days and more with some tuneable ordnance..
