I’ve read an opinion that ISIS getting stuff like artillery was a very good thing. When hidden among the people they are hard to kill, but when they gather around their howitzers you know where to put your bomb.
You are correct on all accounts, I was just reading more of Naharnet;
There should be adequate response against those who funded, assuming they exist.
OTOH; a fair number of Lebanese officials are sympathetic to the Hezbollah side, so that needs to be considered too.
That horrific war has raged since 2011; so that brings one to ask, was this previously looked into? Why now?

ISIS is not “defeated” until they are all dead. Allowing them to escape is not defeating them.
But rather than using Arty, they can go to the classic Russian 122 and 140 mm rockets, which can be easily hidden and require two sticks to launch them.

This was is not now terrorism. This is classic Stage 2 and Stage 3 Guerilla Warfare, and you can never defeat the guerilla in the field. But, that guerilla cannot ever survive without nation-level logistical support.
You destroy the support base and/or support system, and you have destroyed the guerilla in the field.

The facts say otherwise - they punched their way through Fallujah last year (remember the US Marines had their biggest urban warfare battle since Hue in Vietnam?). They are also punched through about 3/4 of the major city of Mosul.

Around a year ago the US military created a new branch of the Iraqi Army called the Counter Terrorism Service. They were created just to fight the Islamic State and are doing most of the real fighting. The Iraqis call them the Golden Division. The CTS has been getting some real work done though the rest of the Iraqi Army is just along for the ride.
