Spanish police were on Friday hunting more than a hundred restaurant customers who fled without paying the bill.
The party enjoyed a 2,000-euro ($2,100) banquet on Monday at the Hotel Carmen restaurant in Bembibre, northern Spain, before promptly doing a runner.
"They were dancing, then suddenly they had disappeared. In one minute, a hundred people had left," restaurant boss Antonio Rodriguez told Cadena Ser radio.
"They didn't leave in little groups -- no, they went all at once."
Restaurant staff were unable to stop them, Rodriguez said. "You can't do anything when there's so many of them."
The Guardia Civil police declined to confirm media reports that the fleeing diners were from Eastern Europe, but an official from the force said they were not Spanish nationals.
"We know roughly where they are," he added.
A lot of European restaurants, especially small family owned ones, do not accept credit cards the way nearly all US restaurants do......................

If they really were gypsies, the credit card on file was lifted 15 minutes before the dinner was ordered.
Restaurants here usually demand a deposit BEFORE the banquet.................

Guess they had to eat and run.
Fast diners, not fast food. Guess they all thought the last one to leave would pick up the tab. Probably just a little cultural miscommunication. LOL

My Mom was Yankee my Dad Rebel. I can say it either way. ;^}
My wife and her mom were robbed by Romanian gypsies while traveling in Spain in 2007. Unbeknownst to them, the gypsies poked a hole in a tire on their rental car at a rest stop and then followed them down the highway and robbed them of money, camera and passports, when the tire went flat.
The Spanish cops were of little help. Threw up their hands and said they couldn't do much to help them.
They told my wife that they had dealt with so many crimes by the gypsies that remain unsolved that they hardly pursued them anymore. Why? Because few of these gypsies had permanent addresses, most had numerous aliases and they constantly moved around the country in groups fleecing the public, especially tourists, at will. And then just disappeared.
But he told me later the hotel where the affair was held was stiffed by the gypsies. They had skipped out on a $23,000 tab. On top of that, they trashed the venue that cost the hotel thousands more to repair. He said there was a deposit paid before the wedding but it didn't come close to covering the expenses of the gypsies' event and destruction.
I never learned the final outcome of the hotel bill, but he did tell me months later that the gypsies still owed the money. He said they talked openly about it and bragged about taking the hotel for a ride.
This is pretty common behavior for gypsies and indicative of their skills at scamming and fleecing innocent, trusting people.
We have West Virginia gypsies here. Scam artists. If a truck pulls in with WV plates, I send them packing immediately.
If you passed a “No Soliciting” sign to get here, I don’t want to do business with you. Everything from driveway sealing to meat to home alarm systems. Who buys meat from a pickup truck?
