GOP considers excluding rich from healthcare tax credits: report
The Hill ^ | 03/03/2017 | Peter Sullivan

Republicans are considering excluding the wealthy from new tax credits under their ObamaCare replacement plan, according to documents obtained by Politico.

The documents are dated Feb. 24, so they are not the latest version of the Republican plan, but they provide an update on a previous leaked bill from Feb. 10.

The bill remains largely the same as a previous version. It still includes tax credits to help people buy insurance, a central element of the plan, but one that has come under fire from House conservatives who worry it is a "new entitlement."

Those tax credits are based on a person's age, not their income, which Democrats argue fails to give enough help to low-income people.

The possible change being considered by Republican would be to cut off those tax credits so that higher-income people would not receive them. That proposal could help bring down the cost of the bill.

The plan still includes a proposal to phase out ObamaCare's expansion of Medicaid, another controversial element that has split Republicans, given that some want to protect the expansion.

The proposal also still includes the controversial idea of taxing more generous employer-sponsored health insurance plans, which are now tax-exempt.

“GOP considers excluding rich from healthcare tax credits: report”

The definition of “rich” varying from year to year as the new program starts swirling down the drain, just like the current one.

Just another proposal for another welfare program on top of existing welfare programs.

Thank you, Republicans.

“...How is a tax credit an “entitlement”?...”

If you earn your own money, you can keep your own money.

If The man with a police force tells you what you can do with your money, it's called dictatorship.

In America, as Sinclair Lewis wrote, “It Can't Happen Here” (a very good book, btw).

People NEED to be refused care if there is no ability to pay.

It’s cruel, but so is reality. You expect doctors, etc, to work for free ? Try calling a plumber, if you can’t pay him. . . .

No. 14th amendment, right? Why should a rich man not get the same break someone like me gets?

Hey GOP: stop the class warfare.

Tax credits seem to be a favorite scam of Congress, rather than outright budget cuts or tax cuts.

About the only health care tax credit I might support would be one - a limited one - for insurance companies that provide plans for this with existing conditions, although I realize that the potential for fraud is there.

Is there any factor for poor people making poor decisions that lead to earlier deaths?

Things like inner city deaths, because of gang activities, drug deals, drug usage, robberies, etc.

Every day in Chicago there a news reports of people killed. Some are just kids.
Is this factored in to lives of poor being 15 years shorter?

People NEED to be refused care if there is no ability to pay.

It doesn’t work that way currently. Anyone who calls 911 and wants to be transported to a hospital gets an $800 taxi ride. When they get to the hospital, the hospital treats them for whatever their complaint is. They do not get turned away and most of them who either do not have insurance or have a typical Obamacare plan with a $5000 deductible have no intention of ever paying anyone. In our state public hospitals do not have the option of turning them away.

If they have a chronic problem they keep calling back and we keep transporting. One alcoholic in our jurisdiction ran up over $2,000,000 in unpaid ambulance and hospital bills. Of course when he finally got too old to keep up his errant ways, and was put in a supervised long term care facility he was celebrated by the local media as some type of hero.

The rich living longer and why.

Oddly, no one know why. Some reasons were excluded. Bad choices in lifestyle? Nope. Excluded. The study found the rich smoked and drank in the same proportions as the poor. Drug use? Opiod addiction? Nope. No evidence of it. The rich are doing oxycontin in the same proportions as Medicaid poor.

It’s a pretty profound puzzle. It’s true. No question there is a 15 yr addition to life expectancy for the rich, but no one knows why.

Your "factoid" is utter crap. It is certainly out of step with my own experience. My last "vacation" was in April of 1999. Most weeks are 55 to 80 hours of work. My earned vacation time is pegged out at 480 hours. That is accrued by crediting 7.68 hours for each 80 hours worked. I'm up at 7 AM and work until 1 AM or later most days. I carve out an hour to go to dinner with my wife after she returns from a 10 hour shift dispatching police/fire/EMS, acting as system admin for the dispatch computer systems and notary public. We're hard pressed for more time together than a daily meal.

In exchange those long hours, I pay $700 every two weeks for crappy "healthcare" coverage with a $9,000 deductible. I haven't seen a doctor for any purpose since 2013 when the jackasses screwed up a colonoscopy and left me bleeding out all night before they could fix it. Otherwise, the exorbitant premiums I pay for no service are subsidizing the healthcare of people who live in Section 8 housing, get an EBT card re-charged every month and enjoy subsidized healthcare at my expense.

What is proper is for those who want a service to earn the damn money to pay for it. Don't take 60% of my gross and label me "rich" while I have no time for anything that normal people might label a leisure activity. The assertion is utter crap.

Twiddle, tweak, and fiddle, Rename some stuff, but don’t change anything substantially. Repeal the name of the thing but keep the substance.

Since when does all private property have to be earned? Legal ownership of legally acquired private property is either respected or it isn’t.

Is there a difference in principal between the forced slavery of 1860 and the tax slavery of 2017?
>

In principal? In NO WAY are the two different. You WILL work for the master, the master WILL\DOES own everything you have\make, the master WILL come after you in every shape/matter/form/reason should you resist...

2017? (Some of) the People save been economic slaves for well longer than slavery existed in the U.S....16th\SS centennial was just past. Master has only gotten worse w/ the Great Society, War on Poverty\Drugs and now O’Care.

>...The democrats have won...

How have you seen it to even be called a ‘battle’? Aside from elections and those times it covers their asses, when has ANYONE given more than lip service to the Constitution and Federalism??

>...Once the Republican leadership accepted this premise...

It was accepted from the start; there’s never been any ‘opposition’. I don’t believe it was the (D) that exempted Congress (as a ‘small biz’ IIRC) from O’Care.

Not Washington state. Just Seattle.

The Washington state effort was crushed last time almost as badly as it was in 1973 when it was first suggested.
