Unemployment was calculated more honestly back then. Todays number does not account for millions who have quit looking, etc.

Now that Trump is president, they'll use all the numbers when calculating those figures.

Agreed. Although I believe the unemployment rate declined, we’re comparing apples to oranges with rates calculated differently.

Unemployment compensation, whether one is eligible for it or not, whether one collects it or not, and whether one collected it or not, has no bearing on the way the unemployment rate is calculated.

It was calculated the same way in 1972. In fact, in 1972, only 60% of adults had or were looking for jobs, compared to 63% today. So the percentage of people not interested in working in 1972 was actually greater than today.

See my reply above. People not looking for work weren’t counted in 1972, and there were even more of them then! Nobody even mentioned it at the time.

Workforce participation 1972: 60%
Workforce participation 2017: 63%

94 million out of work. What is that? 27% of the population? So much for the under 5% unemployment.

Full employment doesn’t cause inflation. Currency devaluation does.

Full employment causes people to make more money that compensates currency devaluation, which the government and big business hates.

As millions enter the job market in the next few months, expect the unemployment rate to rise and the media to joyfully report.

Just wait till those darn robots take over.

...94 MILLION Americans who are out of the labor force who want to work but can not find a job.

No, there aren't 94 million people who want to work and can't find a job.

Not even close.

The 94 million represents everyone over 16, including students and more than 50 million people over the age of 50, the majority of whom are retired.

Throwing around a number that is so obviously wrong doesn't help the conversation - it only gives critics ammunition.

I should’ve worded that much better.

The media is now going to start using all of the numbers, then perform their most incredible mental gymnastics to blame Trump. We know how they are. Democrats can do no wrong, whereas all Republicans are literally Hitler.

I'm sure you then have the 'real' number at your fingertips but chose to withhold it. What is it?

Also remember that stay at home moms are not usually “looking for work.” And there are many of them, still. Thank God.

No one can say exactly but the closest measure we have is probably the U-6 which measures those actively looking for work, those who aren't actively looking for work but would probably take a job if one were available, as well as those working part-time who would rather have a full-time job.

As of January 2017 that number is about 9.4 million.

You can claim that the government statistics are bogus but no credible analysis would say the real number is 10 times the reported number.

Until the numbers are based on real hard data we are only fooling ourselves. Not saying that it isn’t getting better out there but its not “Happy Days are Here Again!” time.

No kidding. I just lost my job. But I'm over 45 and in tech leadership. They push us out and put in place Indians and millennials (who have no clue how to manage, but oh well).

Time to be an entrepreneur.
