Can Trump Slay The Regulatory Beast? Other Presidents Tried And Failed
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 3/2/2017 | Staff

Economy: One part of President Trump's address to Congress that deserves more attention than it got was his discussion of federal regulations. The growing and largely unaccountable regulatory state is the biggest problem the economy faces today. Reining it in will take true grit and determination.

In his speech, Trump announced that he has "undertaken a historic effort to massively reduce job-crushing regulations, creating a deregulation task force inside of every government agency. And we're imposing a new rule which mandates that for every one new regulation, two old regulations must be eliminated."

This is welcome news for anyone who cares about economic growth, and helps explain the outburst of optimism in the business community and among investors. Various surveys show that regulations are the top concern among business owners, and the avalanche of complex, arcane rules from a multitude of federal agencies — to say nothing of state and local regulations — is making it increasingly difficult to start, operate and grow a company.

The problem is that presidents — both Republican and Democratic — have for decades pledged to roll back, streamline and get rid of outdated or overly cumbersome regulations, only to largely fail in the end.

Is it true that other presidents tried?

Reagan, I suppose. But then I might have to go back to Calvin Coolidge as the last guy who actually wanted government to do less.

Trump will make this happen.

If President Trump can keep his team focused with the Will and the Drive to accomplish the goal the back of regulatory government will be broken.

Reading the article is not a FR tradition, hijacking a thread is too... the fair tax will go a long way in eliminating these regulations and power grabs.

Is it true that other presidents tried?

I doubt they seriously tried.

I read the article. I think my original comment is spot on. Other presidents claimed to try but they did not try. Trump will try and do.

The Brit comedies Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister take a lighthearted look at the type of thing Trump is up against - the permanent bureaucratic deep state who believe that they are the government and that that government exists to serve them.

Hijacking FR threads is a grand old tradition. I have, at times, mastered the art.
Concerted effort is the key. The bureaucracy never sleeps.

Reagan really tried, but President Reagan (one of our three greatest presidents) trusted in the expertise of others. That was one of his greatest strengths, as he delegated to those who could get things done. It was also one of his greatest weaknesses as he allowed insiders to snow him on whether cutting each specific part of big government would be a good thing.

Trump will also try, and President Trump has an interesting advantage. Big government has generations of experience convincing different types of people that government has to grow for a range of plausible but fake reasons that have successfully tricked good people and bad people. However, they have no experience at all dealing with anyone like President Trump. I have no doubt that there is a way to deceive him, but will they hit on the right trick before he delivers fatal blows to agency after agency? President Trump is new to them, while he has a lifetime of experience using his temperament and his quick mind to get things done.

President Trump is on the right track in terms of nominees:

Scott Pruitt, Environmental Protection Agency administrator, sued his agency many times before Trump appointed him.

Rick Perry, Energy Secretary nominee, called for the elimination of his agency when he was a candidate for president.

Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State, is an oil executive, and a natural opponent to the climate change agenda. Confirmed 56-43; if he’s offending the Ctrl-Left, we have to love him.

Jeff Sessions, Attorney General, is a believer in the rule of law and an opponent of identity politics in the courtroom. Confirmed 52-47; also offending the Ctrl-Left, so we have to love him.

Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education, is a charter school advocate. Confirmed 51-50; my hero!

Ben Carson, Secretary of HUD nominee, is an advocate for individual responsibility and an opponent of the welfare state.

Many of these picks look perfect to resist seduction by the Deep State and by other big government advocates.

No way any one man can slaughter the beast.

Way too complex, too large, too embedded in too many places.

Stop and think - the tentacles are everywhere.

It would take decades just to locate all of the regs.

Then - who is going to make the decision of which ones to lop off, and which ones to keep?

Love Trump’s policy of kill 2 for every new one.

Same rule needs to apply to Congress - kill 2 laws for every new one you pass........

Really thought you were going to go down a different path than that... for every new congressman, you have to kill 2...

I have to differ with you there. While the present IRS code of regulations is certainly an issue, it is not even the tip of the iceberg. The regulatory state is a massive affair. It's most of what government does.

It is what turns an undrained 100 sq.ft. puddle of water in the middle of your six acres of property into a mapped and protected wetland with aircraft flying over periodically to ensure the 50ft encroachment barrier is not violated.

It goes on and on.

And by the way, everyone's hero Scalia is partially guilty. In explanation of "Chevron Deference" here is what he said:

Broad delegation to the executive is the hallmark of the modern administrative state; agency rulemaking powers are the rule rather than, as they once were, the exception; and as the sheer number of modern departments and agencies suggests, we are awash in agency 'expertise,'" he said.

Yes, if he is willing to eliminate enough jobs occupied nameless, faceless, unelected government employees that do nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing productive.

I agree. There isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the Bush presidents and the Democrats. They are actually all chums and members of the Uniparty.

to melt an iceberg, takes time and persistence and a little heat... the fair tax will end the control of congress to control the people, the power of the purse will return to the people and allow more of those people to enter politics. unleashing the economy will give people the resources to build the necessary institutions locally, to battle these unruly regulators...

i have dealt with owning a nontidal wetland of special state concern, in the state of maryland... and i nearly went crazy battling the forces intent on taking my property away from me... i lost my sanity, but they didn’t take my land... i realized owning land in maryland was not a reliable investment and sold to a developer who was better suited to deal with the regulations...

end the power of the IRS and the tyranny of bureaucracies... push for the fair tax.
