Among the most popular of the potentially looming tragedies cited by proponents of Obamacare is that thousands of Americans will die if Republicans are successful in repealing it.
David Himmelstein and Steffie Woolhandler at the Chicago Tribune, for example, posit that repealing Obamacare will kill as many as 43,000 people every year due to a lack of health insurance. Note that they dont just suggest that 43,000 people will die as a result of the repeal. Specifically, their argument is that Republicans, and you that may support the effort toward repeal, will kill them. Its hard to miss the political currency theyre aiming for with the shocking headline.
Their argument is utterly insane. Theres absolutely no way to quantify or verify the number claimed. After all, in order for this to be remotely plausible, one would have to be able to prove that there are 43,000 people (or some number relative to population growth) who annually died in the years leading to Obamacares passage, who, but for their having Obamacare-designed health insurance, would have otherwise lived.
Since that would be unprovable, disseminators of this argument tend to lean on apples and oranges comparisons between mortality rates and health insurance coverage data.
Glenn Kessler at the Washington Post gave Bernie Sanders four Pinocchios for his claim that the much lower number of 36,000 Americans would die annually due to the repeal of Obamacare. Those numbers, Kessler notes, were based upon assumptions drawn from a study about the impact of Massachusetts healthcare law, which preceded Obamacare. The study that Sanders used in his calculation compared mortality rates for adults from 2001-2005 to the rates in 2007-2010, after the law was implemented. The research indicated that for every 830 adults who gained insurance, there was one fewer death per year.

The day Obamacare went official, was the day my health care ended - for the first time in my life. It was simply too expensive, when comparing what it actually covered to the cost. My wife and I are now 63 and what we’ve learned about health CARE has completely changed our world view.
If only people knew how cheap it is if you don’t have insurance. Doctors and clinics offer REAL prices for services and they are not that high. HC insurance is a scam.
Oh, and we’ve saved roughly $43,000 AFTER tax dollars since that day. In a state where the average rent or mortgage payment is in the $500 range, that is a life changer.
They were alive before getting insurance, they were alive before obamacare, they were alive during obamacare and they will still live between obamacare and Trumpcare.
The opposition just pulls numbers out of the air (or other strategic places). They get away with it because they know the Media won’t call them on it.
If they were ever confronted and forced to prove such numbers, they would be unable to.

Pre-Obamacare, supposedly 40 million were uninsured. At the height of Obamacare, supposedly it covered 20 million formerly uninsured. So what happened to the remaining 20 million? Since it was basically free for those who could not afford healthercare, why did that remaining 20 million fall through the cracks?
Politicians have been playing with numbers-fabrication for decades.
Why is this conversation even necessary? Obamacare will NEVER be Repealed. Not going to Happen. There is NO WAY IN HELL the republican leadership will own this.
Donald Trump and his administration will defend and support that document as they have sworn to do.
That "strong Latina Woman" on the Supreme Court's face during the speech was very telling with her displeasure of Trump....she doesn't support the U.S.Constitution.....
These retarded “whorespondence” people wanna whine that killing Obamacare will “kill thousands”, but play with their crotches thinking of how many thousands will die bringing in Islamic terrorists into the country. GTFO of my country!!
whorespondence = presstitutes.
“If only people knew how cheap it is”
You’ve stumbled on two of the critical things that make insurance outrageous.
1) Even prior to commie care, states had been dictating that insurance companies cover the cost of things like check ups. This is like adding fill ups and oil changes to car insurance. Prior to that wave of statute in the 80s, insurance wasn’t so bad because they were basically hospitalization policies. Only those electing it would pick more comprehensive policies, and pay for it. So when the number of claims go up by several orders of magnitude because everyone wants to “get their money back” by using insurance for “maintenance”, you can’t help the price flying off into the wild blue yonder.
2) Not many today even seem to understand what insurance is. They see medical as a third party coupon discount. What this does is take the consumer out of the loop in terms of market price control. They will do what their insurance covers, regardless of cost vs benefit. With no real market control on price again, prices up.
There have never been more than 12 million people enrolled in Obamacare and most are actually Medicaid recipients
Enrollment has dropped to around 10 million due to unaffordability.
The same people who elected to forgo insurance before ObamaCare still elect to forgo insurance. In fact, the number are higher due to the higher costs.
Col. McCormick must be rolling over and over in his grave after seeing what has become of his newspaper.
And I had such high hopes.
Insurance was devised to protect assets from unexpected losses. In our country no one is denied life saving treatment because of lack of funds.
One of Obamacare’s biggest negatives is that it forced many to buy insurance policies to pay for other people’s sex change operations, abortions, drug abuse treatment, alcohol treatment, prophylactics, and numerous other conditions that are unnecessary, elective, and expensive. The coverage for all this crap is so expensive that people had to accept huge deductibles so that the average person would never receive a benefit.
“No, Repealing Obamacare Wont Kill Off Thousands of Americans”
Nope, but the VA might.
Of course it is, and one has to be totally clueless not to see it.
Two of our kids don’t have health insurance any more, after having it their entire lives. It is too expensive now. Mike was making about ten thousand dollars a year, delivering pizza, while looking for a better job. We applied for ObamaCare for him in California for under $100 a month, with $4500 deductible. California/federal subsidized insurance. The bill came to him at $244 a month with $6350 deductible and didn’t cover prescriptions or treatments. Pretty much would pay for two OV per year. NOT WORTH IT!
Daughter just had baby number two at home, with a Midwife. I paid $5K for that. She isn’t working, husband just took new job at 1/2 his old salary. She has two babies now and I would rather she stay home with them. So I gave her money for the home birth. {In our family we have babies fast, I had our daughter in less than an hour}.
She doesn’t have money for health insurance.
It wasn’t free for my son who was single and making about ten thousand per year. And he also had to pay rent, food, utilities, etc.
Thousands die every year. If the same thousands die anyway they will of course blame losing Obamacare.
Isn’t Obama coming out with some kind of anal seepage ointment or was that the book deal?
