~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

Fort Leonard Wood is a United States Army installation located in the Missouri Ozarks. The main gate is located on the southern boundary of St. Robert. The post was created in December 1940 and named in honor of General Leonard Wood (former Chief of Staff) in January 1941.

Fort Leonard Wood is a thriving installation that has evolved from a small basic training post 70 years ago to a premier Army Center of Excellence that trains about 80,000 military and civilians each year.

Home to the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, Fort Leonard Wood now trains and educates service members and develops doctrine and capabilities for the Training and Doctrine Command’s U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear School, U.S. Army Engineer School, and U.S. Army Military Police School.

Fort Leonard Wood has received numerous additional responsibilities to include supporting a colonel-commanded Marine Corps Detachment and an Air Force Detachment, which are both the largest on any Army installation, are located on Fort Leonard Wood; a large Navy Seabee Detachment and elements of the Coast Guard train here as well.

We certainly do need more than that. We seem to get just a little each time we get lucky enough to get any at all. What we really need is a system to come up from the Gulf. That’s where we get our good soakers.

Channel 5 just did a half-hour special on Gatlinburg the other night. They’re bouncing back in the town but all those homes are a long way from being replaced.

At least you got home in one piece. Sounds like it was a hair-raising drive at times. And with the temps dropping, that ice isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

I figured that they’d be determined to bring their city back. But the insurance companies must be tearing their hair out over all the damage!

And then the people who want their stuff replaced first! Ugh!

They are determined. “Mountain Strong” is their motto these days.
Downtown wasn’t damaged nearly as badly as the surrounding area where the homes were. That helps. And the businesses are trying to help out those who lost so much in any ways they can.

You know it’s a nightmare for the insurance companies, trying to deal with so much at once. And so much is irreplaceable - - family photos and heirlooms.

I wonder how many of those families will leave that area for another that doesn’t hold such scary memories.

They’ve mentioned that there are some who won’t stay but not how many. Many others plan to rebuild.

It was sad when they talked to some of the people who had built their homes with their own hands. One older gentleman had built his over 30 years ago and said it had taken quite a while to complete. He sounded so sad and who can blame him? There was nothing left but the foundation.

Woo-Hoo!! Fort Lost-in-the-Woods, in the Great State of Misery!

I spent a lifetime there one Spring...Basic Training in Feb-Apr of 1976. Arrived to 80o temps and, when we graduated in April, we were marching in the snow!

Proud member of Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Basic Combat Training Brigade. C Company was the only one still housed in steel Quonset huts when I went through. We had to cross the company area (read: go outdoors!) to get to the latrines and showers.

That does sound miserable. Seems like everyone who went there has memories of miserable cold!

My hubby went through a winter in Rantoul, IL, for his tech school. He’s a Texan and had never seen that much snow and ice! Black ice on the streets where they marched.

Ahhhh....war stories! :)
