~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri

Fort Leonard Wood is a United States Army installation located in the Missouri Ozarks. The main gate is located on the southern boundary of St. Robert. The post was created in December 1940 and named in honor of General Leonard Wood (former Chief of Staff) in January 1941.

Fort Leonard Wood is a thriving installation that has evolved from a small basic training post 70 years ago to a premier Army Center of Excellence that trains about 80,000 military and civilians each year.

Home to the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, Fort Leonard Wood now trains and educates service members and develops doctrine and capabilities for the Training and Doctrine Command’s U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear School, U.S. Army Engineer School, and U.S. Army Military Police School.

Fort Leonard Wood has received numerous additional responsibilities to include supporting a colonel-commanded Marine Corps Detachment and an Air Force Detachment, which are both the largest on any Army installation, are located on Fort Leonard Wood; a large Navy Seabee Detachment and elements of the Coast Guard train here as well.

Good evening, radu...hope you had nice weather if you couldn’t have rain.

Driving is interesting here today. I’m about ready to try it on the way home.

We were in the 50’s today. Still warm but chillier than the glorious weekend.

I had a lesson, so no dog park today.

Penny enjoys it whenever we can, but it’s a bit of a drive.

maybe if tomorrow is nice, we’ll go.

Sounds like you had a good day, getting out for lunch with your friend.

Very quiet day here. We did get a little rain but it didn’t warm up like they said it was going to. More rain tonight and tomorrow and a warm front is SUPPOSED to come through. Sets us up for storms Wed. as a cold front hits. Sounds like March is going to come in like a lion.

That's funny.

I went to Nam in April '70 and when I Derosed in '71, I thought I'd get Fort Lewis near my home.

Nope, off to Germany, basturds! (But actually a great time.)

Ugly day and we did get a little rain to justify it.

Not as ugly as it is up there though. Your streets look NO FUN at all to drive on. Be careful on the way home.

We always called it Fort Lost in the Woods.

LOL! I have heard it called that before.

We went to our favorite Tex-Mex place that hubby doesn’t care for. Going with her is the only time I get to eat there.

I hope our March doesn’t come in like a lion. When that happens we usually get high winds and a sandstorm and I can live without that! Hope you weather does warm up! I know you want to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Since you don’t get to go to the Tex-Mex place often, that made the day that much better!

I’m not sure just what areas will be affected by the storm system but you might want to keep a close eye on your weather report tonight. If it’s going to affect TX, it’ll hit tomorrow. Maybe you’ll get lucky and it won’t hit that far south.

They’re talking high winds here as well as strong thunderstorms. It’ll come through during my sleep time so I’ll probably miss it all. LOL

Fort Lost in the Woods, Misery. Was there 2003-2005. Retired from there. Nice golf course.

We along with OK have high wind and fire warnings because of our lack of rain and the low humidity we’re experiencing lately. I noticed the other morning that our humidity was 18%. That’s low even for us!

I hope no fires develop. I’ve seen one and it was a scary sight to behold, being pushed along by very high winds and it nearly reached the city of Midland...about 3 blocks from where my manager lived. When I first came upon it, it was at the airport, 10 miles away from town, and I had visions of the whole airport going up in flames; but it stayed north of that. You can still see the line of dead mesquite trees where it burned. This was at least 5 years ago.

Not as bad as Gatlinburg, but more than I ever want to see again, for sure!

I was at FLW in 1958 for basic training. Stood up to my knees in mud and had dust blow in my eyes. Chiggers. Hot and humid summer. Cotton mouth moccasin in the river. Good cold beer and good buddies at night. Came out a soldier though.

Yeow! 18% sure is low. Easy to understand the fire warnings. OK had a couple of big fires recently, as I recall. They’re scary, no doubt. I hope none break out any time soon.

We’ve had some rain but we’re still not considered a-ok yet. Not in an extreme drought like we were but still not out of the woods. Only got .2 an inch today.

Oh, my! You definitely need more than that. We don’t want any more wildfires in your area either. That one last year was just devastating. Gatlinburg is such a beautiful location. Have they gotten much of the mess cleaned up?

It was a slow drive home. The roads looked pretty dry, but any little dip in the roadway was ice filled. A couple cars that pulled up beside me in the right turn lane did a lot of fishtailing....and sliding. And the stance of the wheels on the Subaru fit just right in the “ruts” of the road. Very dicey when you get sucked into them.

Wanna drive fast? Go around me.
