They were riding (shudder) ‘girls’ bikes....
(for those too young to remember)
‘girls’ bikes were the ones that didn’t have a bar for ones privates to be ‘crushed’ in an emergency situation.
Back in the 50s if a boy rode a girls bike he was ‘made fun of’..
I remember an ‘excellent’ cartoon from the era
