~ Hall of Heroes ~ Archer T. Gammon
Info from here. |
|
Archer T. Gammon (September 11, 1918 January 11, 1945) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honorfor his actions in World War II. Gammon joined the Army from Roanoke, Virginia in March 1942, and by January 11, 1945 was serving as a Staff Sergeant in Company A, 9th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division. On that day, near Bastogne, Belgium, he destroyed a German machine gun position before beginning a one-man assault on a Tiger Royal tank. He silenced a supporting machine gun emplacement and killed two infantrymen before he was killed by a shot from the tank. For these actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor a year later, on February 13, 1946. Gammon, aged 26 at his death, was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. |
Staff Sergeant Gammon's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
He charged 30 yards through hip-deep snow to knock out a machinegun and its 3-man crew with grenades, saving his platoon from being decimated and allowing it to continue its advance from an open field into some nearby woods. The platoon's advance through the woods had only begun when a machinegun supported by riflemen opened fire and a Tiger Royal tank sent 88mm. shells screaming at the unit from the left flank. S/Sgt. Gammon, disregarding all thoughts of personal safety, rushed forward, then cut to the left, crossing the width of the platoon's skirmish line in an attempt to get within grenade range of the tank and its protecting foot troops. Intense fire was concentrated on him by riflemen and the machinegun emplaced near the tank. He charged the automatic weapon, wiped out its crew of 4 with grenades, and, with supreme daring, advanced to within 25 yards of the armored vehicle, killing 2 hostile infantrymen with rifle fire as he moved forward. The tank had started to withdraw, backing a short distance, then firing, backing some more, and then stopping to blast out another round, when the man whose single-handed relentless attack had put the ponderous machine on the defensive was struck and instantly killed by a direct hit from the Tiger Royal's heavy gun. By his intrepidity and extreme devotion to the task of driving the enemy back no matter what the odds, S/Sgt. Gammon cleared the woods of German forces, for the tank continued to withdraw, leaving open the path for the gallant squad leader's platoon.

The USAT Sgt. Archer T. Gammon which served the United States Army at the end of World War II was named in his honor. |

Hiya radu!
Yeah, son came over late yesterday and we hung out all night until I finally kicked him out at bedtime, LOL. Our BIG GAME arrives on Saturday so we'll find time to do some serious 5-6 hour straight game time, only taking breaks to eat and pee, LOL.
A cold, blustery day here today although 50 degree days are in our forecast.
How wuz your day?

Exciting when the first bloom opens in the gardens, isn’t it? Spring isn’t far behind.

Ohboyohboyohboy! Next Sat. can’t get here quickly enough, can it? LOL!
A pretty day to look at here but chilly and windy. Supposed to warm up into the 60s tomorrow, iirc.
Went to visit Aunt Clara for a bit and stopped by the store for cat litter and a few other things. Exciting day, huh?

Good evening, Radu!

The laryngitis has long ago worn out its welcome.
The first bloom is certainly a cause for great anticipation. The Daffodils have sprouted and will begin to bloom in the next few days - the early season ones, that is. We should have Daffodils from then until mid-April.

Good evening, Pro...hope you and son had a terrific weekend together. Brothers Bob, Jim, and John (Archer) Gammon joined for this wartime portrait. During World War II, Bob and John were in the Army, and Jim was in the Coast Guard. Their brother Walter and sister Mildred both served in the Navy (she in the WAVES). Later their younger brother Calvin served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Hey there, radu! How are you?
It was cool until the afternoon and then got up to 70-ish. Cloudy and we thought it might rain, but no dice.
How was it there? Did you get any more rain? Hope you get some warmer weather this week!

Easy to imagine it’s worn out it’s welcome. Laryngitis is no fun at all.
You must have several varieties of daffodils like we do. Our early ones have been blooming for a couple of weeks and we’ll have a nice show for a while yet as the others bloom over time.
Just makes the heart sing to look outside and see some color again, doesn’t it?
I hope you get more nice weather this week so you can get some more dirt time.

Feeling a little better this evening but still in a bit of a funk after yesterday ..... this whole week really. Just takes time to get over the loss.
70s sounds really nice! I think we’re supposed to be that warm Wed. but we’ll get more storms as another front moves through. Clear skies today but I just took a peek at the radar and it looks like we’ll get a little rain overnight. I didn’t expect it until tomorrow. We’ll take it whenever it gets here! :-) Hmmmmm, I need to put the rain gauge back outside. I brought it in last night because it got so cold.
