Pope cuts penalties for paedophile priests

Pope Francis has been slammed by church officials and sex abuse survivors for cutting penalties for paedophile priests. The Pope is said to be applying his vision of a 'merciful church' to sex offenders by reducing punishments to weaker sentences, such as a lifetime of prayer and penance. It has been revealed by church officials that Pope Francis overruled advice given to him by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith about two priests - allowing them to be punished by a lifetime of prayer.

OK, so what about the ones, who DID get molested?
Or did that not happen either, and they’re all lying?

I can remember one particularly notorious ‘priest’ in California that that shit-stain Roger Mahony kept moving around from parish to parish...

I don’t think Your information is correct.
There are 3 books at the time of the explosive story of bad Priests.
These books were written by Priests or ex Priests. and they number the Bad priests in the thousands. Many still in the church.

Like I said there is a network of homosexual priests and Bishops who protect and promote each other.

If you read “Goodbye Good Men” this group took over many seminaries in the past few decades.

All homosexual priests should be defrocked and prosecuted if they commit criminal acts.

Almost all of the examples of sexual abuse by priests was with boys in their mid to late teens, not young children. But it is dishonestly called pedophilia both to attack the church and protect the homosexuals.

As the article said, Pope Benedict defrocked over 800 homosexual priests. I agree completely with this.

Pope Francis has many problems. This is one of them.

The are probably relatively few priests who are truly pedophiles. But there are thousands of homosexual priests who are pederasts.

>>There are almost no “pedophile priests”. There are almost no priests that have sexually assaulted young children<<

Oh my! These are these statements are factually incorrect.

The “bad priests” are part of a homosexual network of priests and bishops the protected and promoted each other.

The number of sexual incidents involving priests have gone down dramatically since Pope John Paul II and the Bishop Ratzinger worked to remove them.

When Bishop Ratzinger became Pope Benedict he defrocked over 800 homosexual priests.

Some homosexual priests remain. We should remove them.

I agree with some of what I think your overall point is but:
1. All the evidence suggests that there are far more than a small number of homosexuals in the priesthood. Personally, I think there a lot of them, depending on the location and order, etc. For example, among the the American Jesuits, there clearly are many, many homosexuals, perhaps a majority. Proof? Just ask one of them.
2. This limiting of the term ‘pedophile’ to abusers of small children is getting down into the weeds of technical speak. In common parlance, those who pursue sexual contact with minors, even 12-15 year-olds, are pedophiles. Where the victims are of the same sex, the attackers are also homosexuals. The vast majority of priest offenders were homosexuals.
3. Almost every diocese in the USA had multiple offenders. That is not a small network.
4. The pedophile problem in the priesthood has mostly gone away. But the homosexual problem remains.

The only punishments a pope can give are ecclesiastical penalties, which means the suspension of an abuser's priestly faculties, assignment to a penitential site (monastery or hermitage for example), laicization, excommunication. (This article stupidly uses the term "defrocking" meaning God-knows-what. It is not a term used in Catholicism.)

This does not take the place of exposure to the secular criminal justice system.

I personally think the abusers should first be tried and imprisoned. After they're behind bars --- and throw away the key --- we can talk about "mercy".

6. It is unnatural for a grown man to be celibate, and be given the ecclesiastical charter to “counsel” people, particularly young people. Our oldest daughter married a Catholic. She was counseled by a priest in preparation for marriage that if her husband strayed during their marriage, she had to “share in the responsibility” for his infidelity. What a load of crap. This nonsense from a man who was not married. There is a downside to dedicating your life to your church and forsaking a normal life, and while as you point out, the numbers of pedophile priests is a very small number, one is too many and the Catholic Church didn’t do the right thing about it for many years.

“The are probably relatively few priests who are truly pedophiles”

Very few. Almost none. Fewer than any other part of society.

“there are thousands of homosexual priests who are pederasts.”

There is a network of homosexual priests and bishops who protect and promote each other. There are not “thousands” of them. I have been an active Catholic all my life and have met many priests. Most priests are good and holy men.

Actually, on the face of it, there's nothing corrupt about revoking a priest's faculties (his permission to function as a priest) without formally laicizing him.

If he remains "on the books" as a priest, at least he has supervision. If for instance he flees his monastic residence, people will know. If he's laicized, he's just cut loose. No more supervision or accountability of any kind. Arguably, that's NOT what you want.

Needless to say, I'm not saying this to justify Pope Francis' decisions. He has been rewarding evildoers and marginalizing (if not punishing) good and upright priests and bishops for nearly his whole pontificate.

Which doesn't make the Catholic Church, in its doctrines and the faith, hope and love of all its members, false. Among even Jesus' hand-picked men, was Judas.

That is as big a mishmash of true and demonstrably false statements as has ever been made on the topic.
