It's not exactly William Buckley challenging conservatives to marginalize the John Birch Society in the 1960s, but the leadership of the American Conservative Union, sponsors of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), finally acted to clear the meeting of some of the more odious appendages of the so-called alt-right by kicking out one of its recognized leaders, Richard Spencer.
Spencer, a white nationalist and anti-Semite, was denounced from the main stage of CPAC by the executive director of the ACU, Dan Schneider. After being cornered by the press, where the alt-right bomb-thrower tossed a few grenades at conservatives, he was asked to leave the premises by conference staff.
Washington Post:
"People want to talk to me," Spencer told NBC News from outside the Gaylord National Harbor complex. "They don't want to talk to these boring conservatives. They want to learn about ideas whose time has come, not whose time has passed."
Spencer, who has frequently attended CPAC without incident, became a minor media sensation during and after the 2016 election. One of the first speeches at this year's conference challenged the media to stop referring to the alt-right as conservative.
"There is a sinister organization that is trying to worm its way into our ranks," said Dan Schneider, the executive director of the American Conservative Union, which runs CPAC. "We must not be deceived by [a] hateful, left-wing fascist group."
There was an irony to Spencer's expulsion on the same day the conference featured White House strategist Stephen K. Bannon, the former CEO of Breitbart News, who once called the site "the platform for the alt

That’s why the term should be dropped and replaced with more precise terms for its various perceived meanings.
I still am suspicious that Hillary’s people made it up.
Agreed. David Duke was getting too old...
The term did exist before they got it. It was never clearly defined except that it wasn’t old GOP or neocons. Spenser declared himself the leader of the alt-right and started doing NAZI salutes for the camera which got on MSNBC in less than 24 hours. An obvious setup.
Bingo. CIA or foreign KGB
.
CPAC isn’t conservative, its Country Club globalist.
.
They may have.
I saw it as a great stepping stone to accuse the Right of going even more racist or whatever.
alt-Right was a very poor marketing idea > IMO.
I know others haven’t agreed with me there.
.
David Duke was trying to be thr ‘head’ of something outrageous.
Working class southern whites tend to like outrageous.
Apparently many are.
Tell you what; if Trump won by 1 vote and it was Spencer’s .....
you don’t see dems disavowing blk panther votes.
I was never interested in anything Richard Spencer said until he got kicked out of CPAC... Who is this guy, and what’s he about?
I’m not sure if it’s me, but I swear I never heard of “alt-right” until the election.
Just off the top of my head -- he refused to denounce Hitler. How utterly condescending for the left to demand such a denunciation, just as they constantly demand that Trump denounce antisemitism...It's just a tactic to associate someone with a wrong/antisocial political position. His supporters snapped a nazi salute at some conference...Neither smart or acceptable behavior, BUT I can reasonably see how someone who is constantly called a nazi might give in to the urge to give the left something to froth about. He doesn't like Israel -- so what, is that a crime? He says that whites are a dispossessed race who need their own homeland. I don't agree, but when Rastafarians say the same thing about blacks or Jewish people (I'm not saying Jews aren't white) say the same thing about Israel, nobody bats an eye. He says the US should govern to the benefit of whites over all others. Again, I absolutely disagree, but Jewish Israelis say and do the same thing and nobody cares.
Lastly, his reference to conservative ideas as belonging to the past. In some instances, he's correct. There are certain segments of the traditional right that cling to policy positions that are at this point entirely theoretical. I'll leave it to you to figure that. Now, no conservative policy is as utterly theoretical as Spencer's dream of the US becoming a white entho-state, but again Spencer sometimes seems to miss basic logical connections.
He clearly enjoys generating outrage from whatever source he can, but most of his ideas are dubbed shockingly racist only because he's white while stating them. Rev. Wright has said worse and gets nothing but praise from the SPLC.
Don’t feel too bad. I hadn’t either.
Some folks say it’s been around since around 2006 (I believe it was).
Nazis are also socialists. The only difference between them and left wing socialists, nazis are open about their racism and Jew hatred. Though lately more and more the SJW types don’t bother concealing their true bigotries while calling those who disagree with them racists. Classic projection.
Most of us probably don’t think RS is worth a minute reading up on; so we might not know that much about the guy.
I’ll tell you, from his wikipedia entry, if that is any kind of reflection, I don’t like this guy one bit. Kicked out proper, someone sucker punching him, that’s wrong. I don’t think he’s going to go anywhere with his views.
It sounds like he says things that get people screaming to keep you from hearing... whatever that signifies.
Mega bump!
I’m not alt(ernative) anything. I am a Conservative, that’s all. No fancy bangles or streamers. Just a plain Conservative, proud of my country, thankful to God for President Trump, waiting for the trumpet.
Thanks. Same here...
Like this statement by Dan Schneider:
“[a] hateful, left-wing fascist group.”
That is exactly what all fascist groups are, left-wing and socialist. The Nazis were socialists, the Communist were socialist, and the current Democrat Party is socialist.
All the anti-semitism, censorship, hatred and thuggery is shared by the Left, the Muslims, and the White Supremacist groups. Hitler used all sorts of people to gain his goals and then had them killed.
The Fake News groups do nothing but try to paint Trump with what he Left is guilty of in spades.
Didn’t C-PAC disinvite Trump a year ago?
FU CPAC!!!!!
