“This is not a prank,” Jimmy Kimmel tweeted in December. “Yes, I am hosting the Oscars.”
Sunday night’s show, airing on ABC, is Kimmel’s third time on the big awards stage, after hosting the Emmys last year and in 2012.
Although Kimmel is typically an entertaining host, this year’s Oscars could be a low-rated show. A poll by the Hollywood Reporter found that 60 percent of Americans couldn’t name one best picture nominee. For the record, the eight nominated movies are “Fences,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Hell or High Water,” “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land,” “Lion,” “Manchester by the Sea” and “Moonlight.”
The same Hollywood Reporter poll found the potential audience divided on politics in acceptance speeches. Of the 800 people surveyed, divided equally between those who voted for President Donald Trump and those who voted for Hillary Clinton, 68 percent of the Trump voters said they disliked political speeches at awards shows; 22 percent of Clinton voters agreed.
Kimmel told the industry paper Variety that he didn’t think his opening monologue would be very political, but “there will be some element of that to the show.”
But writing for the show goes up to start time and beyond, so “a lot of it depends on what happens,” Kimmel is quoted as saying.
Announced presenters for the show include Amy Adams, Halle Berry, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Scarlett Johansson. Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Sting and Lin-Manuel Miranda will perform nominated songs.
The official Oscars website pokes a little fun at itself in providing details on watching the show. A common question, the site says, is “Do I need to dress up if I’m just watching at home? The answer to that last one is yes … yes, you do.”89th Oscars

Mainly the Actors, I will never forget the COnversation I had with Gary Sandy of WKRP in Cincinatti when he was still living in North Hollywood.

The more they push their infantile politics the more potential fans they drive away.
They are selling a product.
It’s not soap powder or automobiles but it is still a product.
And they want the public to buy it.
So what smart business man or woman goes out of their way to antagonize half of their potential customer base?
He later predicted that water was wet and this would be the lowest rated Oscars ever.
Hypocritical Hollywood still gives out awards based on gender? Even the Grammys ditched that years ago. Can’t wait to hear some Best Actress winner lecture the country on transgender issues.
BTW, if you hear about the White Helmet guy who was denied entry, back in 2016 the leader of the White Helmets was denied entry as well. Here’s the video of the State Dept discussing it. Oh and we give about 26 Million to USAID which goes to the White Helmets a propaganda machine that supports the rebels -
