66 Percent of Trump Voters Turn Off Awards Shows When Speeches Get Political

A THR and National Research Group survey reveals how Clinton voters and Trump voters view the Oscars differently.

And you thought Obamacare was a hot-button issue. According to a new THR poll, Americans are nearly as divided about the Oscars as they are about health care.

The survey — conducted by the National Research Group, which in early February canvassed 800 people (half Hillary Clinton voters, half Donald Trump voters) for their opinions about movies, award shows and politics — reveals that two-thirds of Trumpsters have turned off their TV sets because of an actor giving a political speech at the podium, compared to just 19 percent of Clinton voters.

Even if they don’t hit the off button, 44 percent of Trump voters find awards speeches “too political” while Clinton supporters want more politics at the Academy Awards; 43 percent say they want winners to reference Trump’s temperament in their speeches (compared to 8 percent of Trump voters), 39 percent would like more discussion of women’s rights at the Oscars (8 percent for Trump voters) and 34 percent would like more talk about Trump’s seven-nation travel ban (7 percent for Trump voters).

In general, 68 percent of Trump voters say they “dislike” political speeches at the Oscars while only 23 percent of Clinton voters feel the same. About the only area of agreement is that neither side finds Oscar acceptance speeches particularly convincing: Only about a quarter of respondents on both sides of the political fence said their opinion about an issue has ever been changed by an awards show.

I won't be watching this year. In fact, I can't remember the last time I watched an awards show, must be a decade or more. I mean, how boring! Seriously, I bunch of pretty and petty people patting each other on the back? Yawn.

These people are the court jesters of the modern age. I look to them to be entertained. So put them into a movie or television show with a decent plot, dialog, and action - fine. Put them in a pretty dress or tux on stage yammering about this or that? Well, I need to oil the hinges and rollers on my garage door; go through my first aid kit in the car checking expiration dates; clean out that bottom desk drawer I haven't opened in 6 months; maybe re-watch the latest SpaceX shot on YouTube...

Finally, given their over-inflated egos and wildly stupid world & political views I will not give them even the impression of a wider audience. I will make sure the cable box is tuned to the Food Network or some such before turning it off. (comcast dvr actually stays on, only the TV goes on/off) I don't want them thinking they have a bigger audience than they have.

> I never watch any “awards” shows. They are just a bunch of pampered rich people who get together to pat themselves and each other on the back, and hand themselves awards. Who should get the awards are the people who sit thru their mostly lousy crap movies, TV shows, and concerts.

Ditto. Same goes for me too.

Oh Please. I still cannot figure out why she dressed like something from a renaissance fair, but she looked better than when she dresses like a hooker.

Exactly. I have not watched this clown show in at least fifteen years. Who wants to see dysfunctional, mentally unstable people, posing as artists, walk around a stage, preening and falsely adoring each other? They grab the mic, thank everyone and THEN tell me I am stupid by slamming my political choices. Not me.

awards shows that deal with stuff that is purely subjective and opinion-based are particularly irritating.

And blatantly political in their voting, case in point "Moonlight." They were pressured to vote for this film because it was all black. Some of the acting was good but there is no way it should have won best film at the Golden Globes, especially when "Lion" was its competitor.

So not even half. In other words most Clinton supporters don't want to hear it either. Half of Clinton supporters is just a quarter of the population, and they can't even muster that much support for their screeds.

"66% of Trump voters turn off awards shows when speeches get political."

And the other 34% don't turn them on in the first place.

My thought exactly!

Yeah, Mrs WBill and I were watching some show (long forgotten) on the Sci-Fi channel. I don't remember the title, though we watched it often. It was an hour escape, light entertainment.

Anyhoo, one night, the show introduces a gay character. Of course, nothing new there. However, the joke quickly gets made: "We don't discriminate against gays. This isn't North Carolina."

I look over at the lovely Mrs. WBill - a NC native. She looks back at me, and changes the channel, forever. We've never looked back, and I can't remember the last time Sci-Fi was on in our house.

I even wrote a letter. No reply. To heck with them.

I'm sure the Clinton numbers would be very different if they were giving pro-Trump speeches, rather than anti-trump speeches.

The 89th showing of the Academy Awards is coming up on February 26th. It is important that we, the deplorable, show the likes of Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Alec Baldwin, Cher, Ashley Judd, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, and the other arrogant hypocrites, that we, the backbone and decent people of America, are more united than the bitter, unhappy, angry, divisive people of the entertainment industry.

These arrogant, pompous, pampered soulless individuals declare that half of Americans are racist, sexist, and bigoted for voicing our political choice through Donald Trump. Yet there can be no doubt that the entertainment industry does more to exploit, degrade, minimize, and stereotype women than Donald Trump or any other industry ever has.

From Madonna and Miley Cyrus parading on stage with little to no clothing while grabbing their crotches and allowing fans to do the same, to movies that depict women as whores, sluts, and gold-diggers dependent on their bodies for survival, to the deplorable speeches of Madonna and Ashley Judd talking about their periods in a vile manner and talking about blowing up the White House, we must send these evil-hearted people a strong and distinct message that they do not speak for the women of this country and they are not good role models for our young daughters.

In recent social media threads, the good people of this nation are calling for a full boycott of the entertainment industry for this unwarranted and outrageous display of petulant behavior. Some in the entertainment industry are mocking us saying, “Go ahead, we don’t need you trailer trash racists.”

That may be true, but these people do need our green dollars. It is important that we send a strong and powerful message to this group telling them to stick to their make believe jobs and to leave the politics of this country to the people, just as our wise and forward thinking forefathers designed.

The good people of this country are not asking you to give up movies. We are asking you to take two simple steps.

First, protest these groups by refusing to watch the Academy Awards on February 26. Simply change the channel or go for a walk with your family members and tell them how much you love them.
Second, forward this request to as many friends as possible and post it on social media to get the word out.

This will only be effective if we show the same unity we exhibited during the election. Yet how powerful will it be when the ratings for the Academy Awards fall in the toilet. It is only for a couple of hours and requires very little effort. When this happens, the arrogant entertainment industry will understand just how insignificant and powerless they are.

I am so proud of my fellow Americans who stood up and said, “Enough is Enough.” Michelle may have only been proud of this country once in her life, but we the patriots have never lost our love and pride in America. The left is now up to their old tricks trying to bully the rest of us into feeling guilty.

Let them know that their selfish, vulgar, and unpatriotic behavior will not be tolerated. Let them know that we will not be silenced and that we are no longer going to be shamed for what we believe. We must continue the fight. We must shut them down now. We must show them that America will be great again no matter how filthy and disgusting they become.

Boycott the Academy Awards on February 26, 2017.

Why would they watch in the first place? To see some ex-pizza waitress talk about world peace? I haven’t watched it since Audrey Hepburn died.

I don’t watch awards shows even when they aren’t political. They are mind-numbingly banal self-lovefests.

I’d say it’s higher, we don’t watch them. I’ve always loathed them. Won’t let hubby who likes the crap watch any more. I’ll go in another room if he dares turn the crap on.

Total BOYCOTT on my part. Same goes for NFL and NBA.

On the award shows and the comedy shows, I feel that my way of life is being constantly and viciously being insulted and I just do not watch them.

Also not watched are dramas with a moral to convey. Where the point of the story is to show the viewer how well a certain type of person can perform in a tough situation.

Yes, I don't see the upside of tuning in to a show where rich people living in gated communities tell me I'm a greedy, xenophobic, fascist.
