t age 90, Don Rickles has zero plans of slowing down.

“Honestly, I didn’t realize it — all of a sudden I was 90,” said the comedian on his 60-plus-year career to Closer Weekly. “The years skipped by quickly. When it happened, I said, ‘Where did the time go?’”

“At 90, I’m still going pretty damn good,” he said on still performing for a crowd. “And it’s nice because I have no plans to slow down.”

Found something HILARIOUS awhile back. In 1985 there was a comedy anthology series on CBS hosted by George Burns. John Landis directed an episode starring Don Rickles and Don Knotts. A small Montana town loses its major source of tourist income so the townspeople fake a 9.5 earthquake in order to get federal aid. Rickles plays the mayor...

Comedian Norm MacDonald: “People are always calling this guy ‘Mr. Warmth.’ I don’t find him very warm at all. I was surprised found him to be very rude, in fact. Someone should call him out on that!”

I wonder if CPO Sharkey is on any of those retro channels.

It ran for, I think, four seasons. Never a breakout show, but it did the job and lasted for a long time.

For you youngins, CPO Sharkey was the show Rickles was filming when Johnny Carson burst in from across the hall where he was doing the Tonight Show. (Also, for you youngins, Johnny Carson was the long-time host of the Tonight Show....)

Amazing that he is still with us. Clearly he is an “acquired taste” but I always liked him in TV appearances. I heard that in live/club performances he would not be “family-rated”, which is unfortunate since his presentations (on TV), even though insulting/rude, were very funny.

Hearing his name and Bob Newhart reminds me of the 60’s TV appearances of Don Knotts, Louie Nye and my favorite, Steve Allen. Just hearing Steve Allen laugh even now makes me want to laugh. Now I gotta go look up some Steve Allen on youtube!

Don Rickles with Frank Sinatra on Johnny Carson’s show in 1976.

Classic.

To each his own. I don’t find him funny at all. Or, Will Farrell.

It started over Rickles having broken Carson’s cigarette box, a fixture on his onstage desk for years and a source of calming smokes during breaks in taping, the day before when Don was guest host. Carson was genuinely (?) pissed off, had an NBC camera follow him over to the next set where they were taping CPO Sharkey, and lit into Rickles on camera. Didn’t seem to be staged. Great television.

His club act would not be for children, but then again kids aren’t generally allowed into adult drinking establishments. His act is about as rude as you can get without using any of the “Seven Words” and gut busting funny.
