Gillibrand Breaks Away From Schumer, Calls for ‘Up-or-Down’ Vote on SCOTUS Nominee

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) broke away from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) on Tuesday night when she was asked about the Democratic strategy for handling President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch.

"What is the Democratic strategy on this? There has been a lot made of this. Do you try to filibuster Gorsuch and risk the Republicans going for the so-called nuclear option, which would basically eliminate the filibuster now and forever?" NY1 reporter Bobby Cuza asked Gillibrand. "That seems like an equally bad outcome from the Democrats' perspective."

Gillibrand said she hopes her Democratic colleagues in the Senate will vote their "conscience" and that there will be an up-or-down vote on Gorsuch.

"I hope we do vote him down, but make no mistake, if we do hold the line with 60 votes, Mitch McConnell will change the rules the next day, so it will be Mitch McConnell's decision," Gillibrand said. "I do not have any hope that he will not change the rules the minute he doesn't get his way."

"It will likely be 51 votes regardless at any given time that any nominee is blocked, but I expect our colleagues to vote their conscience and to really look at his record and see if he's the kind of nominee that's worthy of our support," the New York Democrat added.

Gillibrand's position differs from that of Schumer, who has said Gorsuch should only be confirmed with a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority

Either Chelsea Clinton or Caroline Kennedy might go after her seat in 2018.

Isn't that the most pitiful situation in the world. That either one of two babbling idiots could knock an almost functional human being out of the race.

They are describing her [Caroline] as Hillary without the baggage.

OMG! Either choice is a 90 IQ slug with nothing but a famous family member. (JFK himself announced he was going to get rid of the Fed and that's what really got him killed. Yes, IMO Johnson almost certainly actually had it arranged, but the IC had to approve. I think.)

I should be clear that I agree with what JFK was trying to do (RWT getting rid of the Fed), but that was what did get him killed IMO.

I think there’s a good chance that senators from blue states may vote for cloture because they want to retain the filibuster for future SCOTUS vacancies. It’s not just red state Dems to watch.

I grew up in Denver and used to drive to Boulder on the weekends to climb.

Plenty of congregations within driving distance that don’t advocate homosexual perversion.

He CHOSE that congregation. It is what it is.

NO SALE!

>>and any church you attend in Boulder is going to be liberal.

There are 3 LCMS Lutheran congregations listed for Boulder.  2 have schools.

Mount Hope Lutheran Church

 BOULDER, CO

Mount Zion Lutheran Church

 BOULDER, CO

University Lutheran Chapel

 BOULDER, CO

If they're still rostered by the LCMS, then they're not openly advocating the homosexual abomination of nature and the perversion of marriage like the social club Gorsuch chose to attend.

We in Montana are watching Jon Tester (D), who has a history of voting 95% Obama liberal until the year before his election, when he goes all-mouth and no-cattle conservative for the campaign.

Flake is doing the same thing in Arizona. Snips from emails I've received from him:
BREAKING: Flake Votes to Confirm DeVos as Secretary of Education
BREAKING: Flake Meets with Supreme Court Nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch
Last week Sen. Flake voted in favor of confirming Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. He also voted to confirm Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, and Tom Price for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Last week Sen. Flake voted to protect the Second Amendment rights of certain Social Security beneficiaries by repealing an onerous Obama administration regulation. He also voted in favor of confirming Scott Pruitt as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Steve Mnuchin as Secretary of the Treasury, David Shulkin as Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Mick Mulvaney as Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Linda McMahon as Administrator of the Small Business Administration.

Can you spell "RUNNING SCARED" children?

I'll try and help to primary him in 2018. I think Kelli Ward will be in the running.

"She’s in fear of her seat in NEW YORK STATE? This is YUGE!"

My first thought as well BUT who? NY would need a conservative celeb at this point, a pol won't cut it on the GOP side.

Gilligand may just be playing the odds at this point:

The democrats will break with Schumer within 3 months>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

With Shumer representing himself as the Torquemada of a Democrat Star Chamber in Senate Confirmatin Hearings, while the rest of the left attempts to traduce President Trump’s administration at every level with unelected holdover political appointees in the Civil Service?

Sure why would Democrats break with Torquemada Schumer? Why not stay with him and watch him continue to try and burn people at the stake?/S

( The country is watching and getting ready to vote in 2018
and Senators are looking over their shoulders!)

Senate Democrats are about to bail Big League!

In the 2014 election here in GA we had two hereditary candidates for statewide office. Jason Carter, Jimmy’s grandson, ran for governor, and Michelle Nunn, Sam’s daughter, ran for Senate.

My mantra at the time was:

No more Kennedys
No more Carters
No more Nunns
No more Bushes
The Founders of this great nation left Europe partially to escape hereditary political leadership, we should not voluntarily return to it.

I think it threw Liberals that I had the Bush family in there, and a few walked away agreeing with me, I think. And of course neither hereditary candidate was even close to being successful, thankfully, but I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Jason. Michelle, maybe, but not Jason.

That being said, if the NY electorate is stupid enough to elect a reverse carpetbagger from Arkansas, they’re stupid enough to elect a Kennedy, despite all the evidence of disaster there.

The evidence..

Mount Zion Lutheran Church

 BOULDER, CO

University Lutheran Chapel

 BOULDER, CO

If they're still rostered by the LCMS, then they're not openly advocating the homosexual abomination of nature and the perversion of marriage like the social club Gorsuch chose to attend.

...indicates otherwise, thus your uninformed assertion is - FALSE!

Simple majority (nuclear) votes for judge confirmations were initiated by Reid and were used to fill important seats, BUT NOT YET FOR SUPREME COURT NOMINATIONS.

To use the nuclear option for Gorsuch stretches the tactic one notch further. McConnel and others don't want to use it, based, I assume, on a belief that dems wouldn't use it for SC judges in the future.

Well, the slime Reid is gone, but counting on democrat's honour is bad business. I'd use it for Gorsuch if necessary, but it probably can be achieved by another means as described on the thread. I'd use if for fix the 9th circuit and the all important DC circuit.

Gillibrand is on the move. Look for her to run for mayor or governor in the future.

Schumer, with all his ne found power, is acting like a jerk and IMHO, this will mark the end of his career.
