CBS: Trump to keep DACA in new immigration policy?
Hot Air ^ | February 21, 2017 | Ed Morrissey

It depends on how one defines “keep.” Donald Trump argued against Barack Obama’s unilateral actions on immigration, including the DAPA and expanded DACA programs, both of which got put into limbo by federal courts. When asked in last week’s press conference about DACA and the so-called “dreamers” — children brought into the country illegally by their parents — Trump replied that his immigration policy would show “great heart” in those cases. Today, CBS reports that Trump’s new immigration policy keeps DACA in place.

Or perhaps better put, it doesn’t explicitly eliminate it:

A source with knowledge of DHS planning said the documents are being finalized by the White House and could be released as early as Monday. It was originally scheduled to be released late last week.

One provision would direct the immediate return of Mexican immigrants who are apprehended along the border back home, pending the outcomes of their deportation hearings. The new procedures would allow for authorities to seek expedited deportation hearings.

The memos do not overturn the Obama 2012 immigration action that created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA has deferred deportations for people who came to the U.S. illegally as children and has provided work permits to more than 750,000 immigrants.

150 new illegal aliens are being processed every day.
They need to at the very least stop handing out any more permits.

I would bet that if someone who could would check out this group, they would find most of them registered to vote. A felony.

DAPA is in the courts and was stopped by a lawsuit filed by the states.
No one sued to stop DACA, it is still operating as if it were law.

yes we agree about that

we will see how it goes, but the only other recent president who delivered most of what he said he would was obama (and that was all to transform America into an Islamic-infested krapistan)

so far....DJT is doing a pretty good job so far, imho...
hope he can continue...
there’s a ton of work to be done to fix what Obama broke

I think a reasonable thing for these selected people is to give them, say, five years to either get their citizenship or hone their language skills and make arrangements to return home so the argument about it being so terribly disruptive, etc is gone. Probably also an extension in return for military service or something. But instant deportation if convicted of a felony regardless of age or circumstance. But we'll have to wait and see what he does.

AFTER THE FENCE IS COMPLETED AND THE STATE CERTIFY THE BORDER IS CLOSED - NOT ONE DAY SOONER - e.g. Simpson–Mazzoli Act,which never completed it's PROMISES other than Amnesty!!!!!!

Isn’t DACA expiring after this year? Obama made it a three year program. So all President Trump has to do is let it die. He doesn’t have to kill it.

The new procedures would allow for authorities to seek expedited deportation hearings.

Then they're going to need more immigration judges than they have now.

I think it is a mistake to delay reversing DACA. Do it now and let left go nuts over everything at once.

priorities

1st the violent

whose next? I’m guessing the welfarisists.

Possibly, Democrats get the idea of making a deal before we get to third priorities. I’m thinking Trump is signaling he is willing to make a deal as part of a total revamp of U.S. immigration policy.

Question is: how long will the Democrats take to realize this.

yes they need stringency to tame the arrogance and middle finger actions of the past. also holding Sessions office hostage. Have them pay back the states for any secondary education they received in wage garnishment. They must sacrifice to show they appreciate America

I’ve read some of those articles. Unless there’s some newer hard data, those numbers are based on a guess of past enrolles.

That’s not to say those in the pipe aren’t continued to be processed. I’d expect some to be.

Don’t count on it. I think this aspect of fixing immigration will be the touchiest and will be the most delicately handled.

But it will be handled.

Exactly. DACA is a problem with a built in solution. There’s nothing to be gained by dealing with that now.

I suspect Trump will use DACA as a bargaining chip in the advancement of immigration legislation. DACA is the one instance that the majority of Americans appear to support. It will be very difficult politically to take away legal status from the 800,000 who have already received legalization, including work permits and SSNs. A number of states have also issued them driver's licenses.

Obama acted unconstitutionally setting up this program. And it sets a terrible precedent. No where does the EO say that you had to be brought here by your illegal parents. You just have to get here by age 15. It is the reason why we had a flood of unaccompanied children flooding the borders. Once they got here, they were reunited with relatives. Obama even helped fund the travel of the parents from the home country to the US in the name of family reunification. In addition, he ordered ICE not to pursue the parents of DACA recipients for deportation. When you reward something, you get more of it.

Trump must end the DACA program. He can say that each current DACA recipient will be reviewed individually and lay out criteria that will allow most of them to stay. I hate to say that given the unconstitutional actions of Obama and the unfairness it provides for people who violated our laws. But I am a realist politically, knowing that given the numbers involved and the status of public opinion, it would make more sense to deal with this fait acompli in a way that does not alienate public support for the rest of his immigration policies. The GOP cowards in Congress should have fought this tooth and nail in 2012, but the fact is that people like Cantor and Ryan were planning on introducing a GOP version of the Dream Act.

Trump should end the program on a date certain and then deal with those who have the status, presumably at the time they have to renew. He should ensure that it is done on a case by case basis rather than dealing with a class of people, as is currently the case. Many of the existing "Dreamers" are in their 20s. You could be up to 31 to apply under the current rules. They are no longer children.

Get rid of terrorists and drug deals and illegals with felonies first. A baby born in mexico and the stupid parents brought them here at 6 months old and now they are 20. Do you think they should be sent back? Really? Thank God Trump is President.

I am thrilled with Trump so far. If he continues the deportations and the ban on terror countries then leaving kids who were 2 years old when they were brought her is not a big deal. He is 1 month in. Give it a break with the hate Trump nonsense.
